All hail the autoclave! AerE’s brand new autoclave has arrived and was carefully moved into its home in the department’s Composites Lab. Thanks to Jim Benson, Andrew “Jobo” Jordan and department chair Wayne Chen who assisted with the moving. Assistant teaching professor Carolyn Riedel showed off the new unit, which will be used primarily in her lab sections and will help students create 3D aircraft components with carbon fiber material donated by Boeing. It will be available for other uses as well when it is officially put into use spring semester. Riedel posed with the new autoclave and the existing one, which dates to the 1990s, that will be replaced.

It was "plane" to see it was a good time at the Wings & Treats Halloween event at the James Herman Banning Ames Municipal Airport, especially with Department of Aerospace Engineering involvement! One of the aircraft treat stations had Make To Innovate (M:2:I) director and Iowa Space Grant Consortium Assistant Director Matthew Nelson with his wife Jennifer (left) and Iowa Space Grant Consortium's Hailey Waller all in the spirit! Space-based Q&A! Iowa State University and students from Iowa had center stage with International Space Station astronauts in a live In-Flight Education downlink sponsored by the NASA Iowa Space Grant Consortium. Students asked questions about life and science aboard the ISS and the livestream was shown in the Student Innovation Center's Step-A-Torium.

Luncheon learnin': Members of the department's Industrial Advisory Council met with students over lunch to answer questions and lend advice about entering the aerospace engineering field. Joe Barta (Hanger 48 Aeronautics), Dave Halstead (GE Aviation, retired), David Voracek (NASA) and Rick Rezabek (Lockheed Skunk Works, retired) led the discussions. Our thanks to them for their dedication to our students!
