Sirius Medical, a spin-off from the Netherlands Cancer Institute and former Gerard & Anton winner, raised €10 million in February. IO+ spoke with CEO?Bram Schermers. His scale-up is improving cancer patient care by using a magnetic seed to locate breast cancer tumors. Sirius' first application is designed for breast-conserving tumor resections, an operation performed 1.3 million times a year worldwide. Schermers talked about the extremely challenging conditions medtech scale-ups in Europe are currently experiencing. New, stricter regulations make for a slow and unclear review process.? ? Schermers sees that uncertainty is disastrous, especially for young companies. “The American market pays more for your product, and entrepreneurs know where they stand. If you apply for certification there, you have results within six months.
