We've been talking to people about battery model parameterization and found out there is a wide range of runtimes for optimization routines (i.e. running a parameter estimation algorithm with a model in the loop). Let us know - if you do physics-based battery model parameterization, what is the runtime for your optimization routine?

The Ionworks team were out in San Francisco last night putting our general knowledge to the test. Unfortunately we just missed out on the win - if only there was a round on battery modelling! It’s been a busy few months and it was great to get the team together in person to recharge. If you’re in the bay area and would like to talk batteries then reach out!

?? Insane improvements in robustness and speed are coming to the next version of PyBaMM ?? ?? 99.9% success rate for DFN simulations from C/100 to 50C ? 40ms average DFN solve time, 100ms maximum (4ms for SPM) ?? 100x speed-up for previous worst-case results Kudos to Marc Berliner, Martin Robinson, John Brittain for their intrepid expeditions into the jungle of our solver code. And thanks to our customers who make it possible to spend time digging deep into these problems.

A few weeks ago, we had the incredible opportunity to showcase our software at YC Launch Live with Garry Tan. It was inspiring to see the early demos from our AI batch mates—it's clear that the world will look very different in just a few years. We believe batteries will transform our physical world ?? ???? as profoundly as AI is changing our digital landscape. However, for this revolution to happen, batteries must achieve breakthroughs in energy density, charging speed, cost-effectiveness, lifespan, and safety. These advancements require substantial investments—often exceeding $100 million—to develop and test costly physical prototypes. During our demo, we showed how we are digitizing the R&D process, enabling our customers to create validated models from lab data and explore millions of design iterations in minutes.

?? New Feature Alert ?? Understand Your Cell's Heating with PyBaMM ?? ?? In PyBaMM 24.5, you can now visualize the individual components contributing to cell heating: ohmic, reversible, irreversible, and total heating. This helps you understand why your cell is heating up, guiding the design of better cells and control algorithms. At Ionworks, we believe that good models should not only match your data but also provide actionable insights into your battery's behavior. This new feature is a step towards that vision.

"We need to deploy electrochemical abilities to the everyday engineers on the factory floor." This article by Billy Wu and commentary by Nicholas Yiu perfectly encapsulates why we are building Ionworks and PyBaMM. PyBaMM massively lowers the bar for electrochemical modeling, making it easy to simulate battery performance and aging under different conditions in just a few lines of code. Or as Dan Steingart put it, "PyBaMM can make any engineer as smart as a Newman student". However, you still need to know Python, and how to find the right parameters for your battery. At Ionworks, we're removing both those barriers with no-code interfaces for PyBaMM models, and software to automatically extract the right parameters for your battery model from your lab data. This means any engineer can immediately generate a validated battery model, then use it to explore the full design and operation space 10000x quicker than in the lab. ?? ??

"The increasingly interdisciplinary nature of the battery field, contrasting with mostly singular disciplinary educational offerings, could be a contributing factor to the battery skills shortage, particularly in battery engineering positions. In these roles, subjects such as mechanical and electrical engineering traditionally have not incorporated electrochemistry into their curricula, posing challenges in attracting talent from these domains." On the flip side, electrochemists looking at cell-level data may lack insights into the upstream battery manufacturing process steps. I'm almost certain the data scientists looking at the cell quality on a batch-to-batch level are a different team. Yet, the success of battery manufacturing hinges on marrying all these expertise areas in perfect harmony. The reality is, we can't rely on finding engineers who wear every hat perfectly. It's not economically scalable to hire these multi-hat engineers who can do everything at the same time. Instead, enabling the talent with the right tools is the only way forward to scaling production at the gigascale. We need to deploy scalable systems that give super-scalable electrochemical abilities to the everyday engineers on the factory floor.
