Here's a great, quick Sunday read from the World Economic Forum. The Eastern Tropical Pacific Marine Corridor (CMAR) is a recent joint initiative by Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, and Panama to protect one of the most biodiverse regions on Earth. CMAR connects existing marine protected areas and ensures safe migratory routes for many species. With the help of advanced technologies—such as satellite tracking and AI—CMAR is revolutionizing how we monitor and protect these critical ecosystems, while also combatting illegal fishing in real-time. As we push towards the global goal of protecting 30% of the ocean by 2030, technology is proving to be a powerful tool. The future of our oceans depends on bold, innovative action! ?????? I am privileged to work alongside this vibrant, energetic community that truly understands that when we come together, we can have a meaningful and measurable impact. The spirit of collaboration and commitment at the 1000 Ocean Startups Annual Gathering was invigorating (and exhausting!). A heartfelt thank you goes to our Steering Committee – Co-Chairs Ted Janulis and Ingrid H. Maurstad, along with Alexis Grosskopf, Christian Lim, Gracie White, and Millicent Pitts – for their leadership and vision and for trusting me to lead the Lighthouse. You have has steered us with ambition, passion and genuine altrusim, making 1000OS an essential force driving ocean innovation and impact. Over the course of our two-day program, we engaged in deep dives led by 1000OS members, which allowed for honest and substantive explorations on real ways to accelerate our impact - such as better communication, faster on-the-water piloting, increasing diversity, and improving impact measurement. We explored the challenges and opportunities ahead, while members reverse-pitched start-ups that are at the frontlines of solving some of the world’s most pressing problems. The featured solutions illustrated how ocean startups are shaping a sustainable ocean economy right now, not in the future. We were also honored to hear from two incredible Friends of Ocean Action: Maria Damanaki, who shared her forward-thinking insights on the Blue Future, and Pascal Lamy, who spoke about generating ocean finance at scale. Their wisdom reminded us of both the opportunities and the immense responsibility we have to Our Ocean. I have to thank all our 49 members, our partners, and our supporters for your ongoing contributions. Together, we are shaping a future where both people and our ocean planet can thrive. Stay tuned for next week’s edition of The Ripple newsletter, where we’ll share key takeaways and outline the next steps in accelerating ocean impact. #oceanaction #oceaninnovation #impactinvesting #sdg14 #radicalcollaboration #1000OS

???The recently released?Planetary Health Check Report 2024?by?Planetary Boundaries Science (PBScience) evaluates our planet's condition in an easy to understand and engaging way: "Just as a blood test provides insights into a human body's health and identifies areas of concern, the Planetary Health Check evaluates the 13 control variables across the 9 Planetary Boundary (PB) processes to report on Earth’s stability, resilience, and life-support functions." According to PBS, six out of nine?planetary boundaries—like Climate Change, Land System Change, and Freshwater Use—have already been breached. ?? A little good news for your Sunday feed! 1.8 million hectares?of coral reefs across Indonesia, the Philippines, Tanzania, and Cabo Verde are set to receive a major boost, thanks to a newly established?$35m impact loan?from the investment teams behind BNP Paribas and Blue Alliance Marine Protected Areas. The initiative is kicking off with an initial?$2.4m investment?aimed at restoring reefs and improving the livelihoods of?up to 110,000 coastal community members. As part of a pioneering Blue Finance facility, these funds will support?115 Marine Protected Areas (MPAs)?and promote reef-positive businesses like sustainable fisheries, ecotourism, and blue carbon credits. It’s a timely reminder of how impactful partnerships can protect biodiversity while supporting local economies — helping both ocean ecosystems and the communities that rely on them. https://lnkd.in/ePP-kGk3 #ImpactInvesting #CoralReefs #MarineConservation #BlueEconomy #SustainableFinance #MPAs

“29% of the world’s fish stocks classified as ‘sustainably fished’ are actually overfished.” Recent research in Science reveals that current stock assessment models significantly overestimate fish productivity and recovery, leading to flawed management advice. With 85% more collapsed stocks than recognized, it’s critical to reassess current practices and adopt new strategies—before more fisheries collapse. How extreme was 2023 for our planet's climate??? The latest?State of the Climate?report confirms that 2023 was a year of unprecedented climate milestones. Led by NOAA and published by the Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society, the report highlights record highs in greenhouse gas concentrations, global temperatures, sea level rise, and ocean heat. The ocean - which stores over 90% of excess energy trapped in Earth’s system by greenhouse gases and other factors - saw widespread marine heatwaves, with 94% of the ocean surface experiencing extreme heat at least once. The disappearance of glaciers like Ice Worm Glacier in Washington, massive wildfires across Canada and Europe, and record-low Antarctic sea ice serve as stark reminders of the accelerating climate crisis. The full report, based on contributions from 590 scientists across 60 countries, offers critical insights into these current trends and the urgent need for global action. https://lnkd.in/gPytfhXQ #ClimateCrisis #OceanHeat #SeaLevelRise #Sustainability #ClimateAction #InvestableOceans
