It is exciting to see close partners like Coalfield Development Corporation and Solar Holler featured in this piece on NPR, which includes two Huntington, WV projects that Invest Appalachia helped to finance: -The renovation of the Black Diamond building, where IA provided a creative blend of capital to meet the project's unique needs; and -The solar installation on the Huntington City Mission homeless shelter, where IA provided flexible bridge financing for the non-profit's federal Investment Tax Credit alongside grant funding from the Appalachian Solar Finance Fund, to make the project possible.

We are excited to partner on the 2025 Rural Community Investment Training cohort, now in it's second year hosted by the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond. The curriculum, designed by Invest Appalachia and facilitated by Paul Wright, empowers local community leaders with the knowledge, skills, and connections to be advocates and "framers" for the investment that their rural communities and small towns need. This program is part of Invest Appalachia's focus on building locally rooted capacity across the investment "ecosystem." Without bringing more actors into this system, and leveling the playing field of knowledge and access, investment capital alone will never reach the communities and projects that need it most. The leaders and projects in previous cohorts have proven that their communities are investment-worthy AND investment-ready. We're excited to see what comes out of this group!

I am safe. Below is a more extensive update, including some difficult information that you should not feel obligated to read if you are dealing with your own needs or have trauma from similar crises (trigger warning). I am safe and so is my family and circle of friends, but we are surrounded by the devastation of Hurricane Helene. In the early morning Friday a tree came through our bedroom roof and smashed my car, and I am thankful it wasn’t worse. We have been without power, water, or consistent cell service. There is no timetable for when water will be restored – it could be months – and an even longer path to restoration of roads and other infrastructure. National media has not caught up to the severity and scale of the situation in Western NC. Entire towns are washed away. Houses floated down swollen rivers and broke up against trees. Entire warehouses became piles of sticks and metal somewhere downstream. Landslides took out major interstates, countless bridges wiped out, roads disappearing into sinkholes, asphalt askew like an earthquake had hit. So many smaller towns and isolated communities are still inaccessible, cut off from emergency responders and communications. Buncombe County alone has likely lost over 100 people, and anecdotal accounts suggest the death toll is much higher than the public numbers, as countless houses disappeared in mud slides or rapidly rising creeks and rivers. The road I took to school as a kid is gone, washed into the river along with hundreds of buildings along the Hickory Nut Gorge – Bat Cave, Chimney Rock, Lake lure. My hometown of Gerton is inaccessible, completely cut off still 7 days after the storm. Fortunately my mom evacuated in advance, thanks to the local volunteer fire department going door to door telling people that this was going to be worse than anything they’d ever seen. ...continued in comments EDIT: Update here: https://lnkd.in/egYHJh7B

Hurricane Helene has left a lasting impact on many Appalachian communities, and we are committed to partnering with these communities for the long road ahead. Our hearts are with those affected, and we stand in solidarity with mutual aid networks and response teams working tirelessly to meet immediate needs. Our focus remains on delivering place-based investments that will strengthen housing, small businesses, and locally-led economic drivers critical to long-term recovery. Central to our mission is the dignity and self-determination of Appalachian communities, and we believe in the power of community-led solutions. We’re coordinating with our network and regional partners to ensure our efforts are responsive to the needs of the people. As we adapt to the realities of extreme weather in the region, it’s clear that integrating climate adaptation into our economic development efforts is crucial. We invite funders to join us in investing in a future where Appalachian communities are equipped to address the now-persistent challenges of climate change. See our Climate Analysis report for actionable strategies: https://lnkd.in/g67t8k-q Now is the time to invest in sustainable growth and recovery. *For partners ready to take immediate action in supporting direct recovery efforts, we encourage you to connect with Appalachia Funders Network and/or contribute to the Appalachian Helene Response Fund at https://lnkd.in/e_3jeJ79
