Great post from Bernie Moran of Roscommon Credit Union highlighting the importance of resilience, teamwork, and quality leadership in difficult times. Along with a shout-out to our very own Donal Murphy and the Service Team at Intuity Technologies, led by Thomas Cox, Fiachra O'Reilly, Stephen Conroy, Damian Edgeworth and Malcolm Houston to name only a few. #OperationalResilience #Storméowyn #Resilience #Leadership #Teamwork
As Storm éowyn passes, its effects linger. In my previous post, I shared what life was like without electricity here in Roscommon. While many counties avoided the worst, others, like ours, are still dealing with the aftermath and this post is for you. Just after my last post, I faced a punctured tyre on my way home at 10.30pm Friday night, likely from debris scattered by the storm. With no phone service, I walked the final stretch of 6km to my home, grateful for the peaceful snowfall that night compared to the previous night. It was a reminder of how even in challenging times, moments of calm can still be found. Over the weekend, Roscommon was cash-only as card payments were impossible due to power and connection outages. It was a stark reminder of the importance of CASH in our daily lives. Some towns even resembled ghost towns still today, with businesses closed and people relocating temporarily to other counties. This morning at 8am we had 4 branches with electricity power in 3 and connectivity in none. We knew we had to open at least one branch even manually and nothing else was even an option. We have Business Continuity Planning in place, we are operationally resilient but the thoughts had started of "What happens when BCP failure is beyond our control?" as a wise man put into words today for me during our discussions. I did not want to know the answer either. Half of our staff were coming in from dark homes this morning and with their own challenges but not one person rang in to say 'I cannot come in' - so cannot was not an option for RCU either. Thankfully one man Tom Owens was on my wavelength too after our Sunday conversations when EVERYONE else said 'there is no way'. Between Tom and Donal Murphy plus their teams, many phonecalls, headaches and perseverance we opened our doors at 11am in our HQ and our members flowed in and online services resumed. Tomorrow will see another branch reopen and by Thursday we should have all 4 back open to our members. We allowed members charging facilities and boiled kettles to send them home with hot flasks today. Simple little actions that meant a great deal to them. These acts are not part of our current BCP but it will be added very soon to the list of learnings. Credit Unions were formed to help their communities and this was the time for that to be put into action. So while my Freezer contents may be going in my bin collection tonight, the storm residue has left me all the richer in information on navigating difficult situations. The importance of the support and backing that even one person makes to an organisation when the chips are down or defrosted?? The work of our frontline ESB staff, Roscommon firebrigade, Roscommon County Council, our local Community Centres has been really commendable and as Norman said "not all heros wear capes" and that is just what they are - Heros! #Storméowyn #CreditUnions #Roscommon
