This time it’s utility websites in the bureau’s crosshairs, as it “increasingly sees a scam involving free online document converter tools.” These are the simplest, most innocuous websites, but criminals are using “converter tools to load malware onto victims’ computers, leading to incidents such as ransomware.” “The best way to thwart these fraudsters is to educate people so they don’t fall victim to these fraudsters in the first place,” the FBI says in an online warning via its Denver field office. “If you or someone you know has been affected by this scheme, we encourage you to make a report and take actions to protect your assets. Every day, we are working to hold these scammers accountable and provide victims with the resources they need.” #cybercrime #malware #ransomware #scams #fraud #cybersecurity #infosec

"Since June 2021, Medusa ransomware-as-a-service (RaaS) affiliates have hit over 300 critical infrastructure organizations, the US government warns. The group engages in double extortion, encrypting victims’ data but also stealing it and threatening to leak it unless a ransom is paid. Medusa’s operators offer payments ranging between $100 and $1 million to affiliates working exclusively for them, the three agencies say." #criticalinfrastructure #cyberwar #cybercrime #cybersecurity #OT #IIoT #ICS #SCADA

The #FCC recently announced the new U.S. Cyber Trust Mark which will be displayed on Internet of Things (IoT) devices that meet their cybersecurity standards. The FCC wrote "the FCC is creating a voluntary cybersecurity labeling program for wireless consumer IoT products. The program builds on significant public and private sector work on IoT cybersecurity. And it will rely on public-private collaboration going forward." This mark is like the EnergyStar Mark you see on appliances but for cybersecurity related to #IoT devices. This is a great step in the right direction to improve the privacy and security "smart" devices.
