Sometimes life doesn’t give you “lemon(s)”, it may just give you 1 BIG ONE ?? If this past February were a fruit, a lemon would best describe it for me. I had back to back family emergencies that required me to step away. Despite the sour start to a short month, we finished on a sugar high by successfully training over a dozen interpreters with our accredited 40-Hour BTG Medical Interpreter course. Now that the dust has settled, I’ve seen how amazing my team is, how strong my relationships are, and I’ve learned that while you can’t prepare for every scenario in life, you should expect the unexpected. These are my top 5 lessons learned while making life’s “lemonade”: 1??Family is: WHY. 2??Get comfortable with being uncomfortable. 3??Train people you trust and get out of their way. 4??Build relationships not clients. 5??Don’t drink the kool-aid, but enjoy the lemonade. Advocacy takes place outside of the interpreter encounter. TRANSLATION: You can’t do both at the same time. Patting your head ????♂? and rubbing your belly at the same time is much easier than trying to interpret and advocate at the same time. The latter just can’t be done and (please) you shouldn’t try to. I strongly believe, the better you interpret, the less likely you will ever advocate. What can you do to improve your interpreting skills?? Here are my top ?? 6 suggestions: 1. Complete accredited interpreter training and continued education courses. 2. Read out loud at least 10-15 minutes a day to increase your vocabulary, practice your articulation, & improve pronunciation. 3. Record yourself while you practice interpreting & listen back for accuracy. 4. Never make assumptions and avoid stereotypes. 5. Clarify and verify as needed while remaining transparent. 6. Your integrity with our profession never allowed you to cut corners, lower the standard, or make excuses for falling short. Your loyalty was unquestioned when it came to representing our brand, language justice, and thought leadership.
