College towns often gentrify surrounding communities, pushing out existing residents and exacerbating economic disparities. When I was in college at University of California, Berkeley, I saw this first-hand. This is often so hard to capture in environmental and economic data, making it even harder for communities to apply for funding and get access to resources. The new Climate and Economic Justice Mapping Tool is part of President Biden’s Justice40 Initiative. It displays new metrics such as historic redlining, wildfire risk, lack of green space, transportation barriers, and proximity to abandoned mines. A notable feature of this tool is its adjustment for college students in the data. By subtracting student populations, the tool aims to more accurately reflect the conditions and needs of low-income communities that are situated near universities. The government hopes to use this public-facing tool to allocate funding to historically underinvested communities that are disproportionately affected by climate change. Last month in Los Angeles, IE and Parks Project collaborated to host an exclusive screening of the feature length documentary Sign My Name to Freedom. The film follows Betty Reid Soskin, the iconic 102-year-old National Park Service ranger, who for years hid dozens of original songs narrating her personal journey through the 1960s and 70s. We were proud to meaningfully gather more than 70 folks, raise thousands of dollars to go towards the film, and reach more than 100,000 individuals with this incredible documentary.
