Why are nonprofit organizations struggling to hire and retain EDs right now? ?? It’s not a secret! In many organizations . . . ?? The scope of ED jobs is bonkers.? ?? The compensation is crap. ?? The stress of the role wears you down. ?? Having a nonprofit board for your ‘boss’ is . . . uniquely challenging. How do we change this? ? Proper compensation. Get real with your $50K - $60K pay scales! $80K is the absolute bottom of the barrel for full time ED compensation in Canada. ? Realistic expectations. Don’t expect an ED to ‘do it all’; hire admin, comms and operational support. ? Clear, specific strategy. Organizations need to have (very!) limited number of well articulated impact areas, and the audacity to say ‘no’ to everything else. ? Decent HR practices. Have proper hiring, onboarding and performance evaluation practices in place! Do everything you can to create an enjoyable, accessible and affirming workplace, and make sure you have processes in place to prevent and deal with workplace discrimination and harassment. ? Better board/ED relationship. Boards need to understand their role in the organization and stick to it. Commit to building an open, trusting relationship that enables the ED, rather than constrains them. ? What else would you add to this list? PS - If this list feels unattainable, it’s time for some bigger restructuring in your organization.
