Today, Interop Labs and University of Waterloo announced a US $1M donation to the UWaterloo Computer Research endowment. The contribution supports Canada's top-ranked computer science school, home of the Institute of Quantum Computing, Waterloo Data & Artificial Intelligence Institute, the UWaterloo Cybersecurity and Privacy Institute and the?Institute for Quantum Computing – and alma mater of top blockchain entrepreneurs. The donation will support the creation of an open-source research lab, the GENESIS Lab ( Generative AI for Secure, Interconnected Systems) focused on scalable, secure, multi-tenant, heterogeneous distributed systems with applications in AI and blockchain technology. The University of Waterloo has a well-established history of producing advances in computer technology and an open-IP policy that turns researchers into entrepreneurs – part of why UWaterloo is a leader in graduating unicorn founders. Notable former students in the blockchain industry include Vitalik Buterin, co-creator of the Ethereum blockchain, and Liam Horne, former CEO of OP Labs PBC. The GENESIS Lab will offer 12 PhD fellowships to exceptional students and six undergraduate fellowships administered via the Waterloo Blockchain club. "Collaborations with industry leaders like Interop Labs, whose groundbreaking work on the Axelar network is shaping the blockchain sector, is the key to accelerating the global impact of the transformative research happening in the Cheriton School of Computer Science,” said Dr. Raouf Boutaba. No matter what happens tomorrow, it's evident that cryptocurrencies and blockchain technology are on the ballot. Globally, regulators and policymakers are considering regulations that make sense. In this American Banker #BankThink op-ed, Lewis Cohen and I advocate for them to consider the benefits they can gain from these new technologies. Whether the focus is on market data reliability, safety of customer assets or the need to track assets, decentralized blockchain networks provide improvements over the current financial system. In addition, regulators and policymakers gain the new ability of "self-sovereign regulatory oversight," thereby becoming direct, non-intermediated market observers themselves. Though, as we acknowledge, there are still questions to be answered, regulators and policymakers should try to help provide resolutions rather than run from them. #blockchain #cryptocurrencies #regulation
