Better water data for better water management
关于我们
The Internet of Water Project was established in 2018 at Duke University in response to the 2017 Aspen Institute report: Internet of Water: Sharing and Integrating Water Data for Sustainability. This report shared a bold vision for how to improve water data infrastructure nationwide that sparked the imaginations of several philanthropic foundations that seeded the IoW Project at Duke. During our 3-year start-up period, we focused on building state and local capacity, developing essential technologies and resources, and creating a network of water data users, producers, and decision-makers across the US. Through the start-up period, we learned that the strength of the Internet of Water is its capacity to unite independent organizations and agencies around the common goal of modernizing water data infrastructure in the US. Only through the collaborative work of these many organizations and agencies can we realize the vision of the Internet of Water: a nation engaged in equitable, sustainable, and resilient water planning, management, and stewardship enabled by shared and integrated water data and information. In 2022, the IoW scaled up from a project of the Nicholas Institute at Duke to a coalition of organizations working together with federal, state, and local government partners to enact the vision of the Internet of Water. The Internet of Water Coalition is a multi-sector collaboration co-led by five non-profit organizations: Duke University’s Nicholas Institute for Environmental Policy Solutions, the Lincoln Institute of Land Policy’s Center for Geospatial Solutions (CGS), the Western States Water Council’s Water Data Exchange (WaDE), the Consortium of Universities for the Advancement of Hydrologic Sciences, Inc. (CUAHSI), and the Water Data Collaborative (WDC).

Crumbling data infrastructure isn't just about economic statistics or government surveys – it impacts vital sectors like water management. NPR explored this issue, highlighting the risks of outdated systems and the opportunities for modern solutions. With the #InternetofWater, we believe that unlocking the power of #waterdata is key to addressing 21st-century challenges. Recent support from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) is a major step forward. Through a $2.5M, five-year cooperative agreement, we're accelerating the development of Geoconnex – a groundbreaking #opensource system to modernize water data infrastructure and enable seamless discovery of water metadata. With Geoconnex, we're building a future where water data isn't siloed but connected and accessible to all. Together, we can transform the way communities, states, tribes, utilities, researchers and more manage and share water information. The IoW is working across borders!? ?? Recently, the Internet of Water team joined global partners in Cairo for a pivotal session on ‘Policy and Technical Solutions for Water Data Diplomacy and Exchange.’ This event brought together experts from over 20 countries to share insights, explore data-sharing practices, and discuss the role of water data diplomacy in building trust and driving better decision-making across Africa.? ?? Pictured here, Faith Sternlieb, PhD facilitates an interactive session where our team, alongside global partners, created space for experts to exchange ideas, share experiences on water data, and identify shared interests and future opportunities for collaboration.? ?? Sharing data makes for more valuable, understandable data — but sharing data effectively isn’t always simple. @Center for Geospatial Solutions team members went to #AGU24 to present on the challenges, successes, and lessons we’ve learned on the journey to create Geoconnex, a digital commons for sharing water data. The best policies for people and the planet are informed by timely, relevant data. However, accessing that data is difficult for several reasons including challenging user interfaces. We collaborated with Colorado State University’s Ross lab to create policy recommendations to help policymakers prioritize funding and open-source development so they can get the most out of their data and make the best decisions for their constituents. To create and maintain service line inventories, utilities need access to comprehensive datasets and GIS expertise. Small and rural utilities that don’t have these resources can struggle to meet EPA deadlines around lead service lines, but the IoW is committed to closing the technological gap. Explore our lead service line tools and EPA policy recommendations in our latest policy brief:?https://lnkd.in/gTDYxV8p #LeadServiceLines #WaterData

Why does public water data matter? When organizations ask, “What’s in it for us?” they’re really asking about the ROI of making water data accessible. Our latest blog post explains how Geoconnex — the data commons bringing the IoW to life — helps organizations unlock the full potential of their water data. By adopting consistent standards, Geoconnex makes data sharing more efficient, saving time and resources while providing greater value to both data publishers and users. https://lnkd.in/g2wQNP5x #OpenData #WaterData

Diné tribal lands are a stone's throw from Washington County, Utah, but decades of American policy and infrastructure created a split in how each can use their shared water supply.
