On Day 3 of #Phytobiomes2024, we explored how transformative collaborations are driving breakthroughs in phytobiomes research, shaping the future of sustainable agriculture. ? The day kicked off with the Early Career Awards, recognizing the next generation of phytobiomes researchers. Congratulations to all the awardees! ? We honored Kellye Eversole for her visionary leadership and passion for advancing science. Her commitment to fostering innovation and collaboration inspires all of us. She challenges us to think bigger, collaborate more deeply, and strive for excellence in all that we do. ? In his plenary lecture, Samiran Banerjee (North Dakota State University) captivated attendees with his insights into the role of microbiomes in One Health, highlighting the vital role soil plays in connecting human, animal, and plant health. ? Talks throughout the day touched on a wide range of topics, including how plant-plant interactions influence disease resistance in wheat, the role of defense responses in maize for maintaining microbial diversity, the engineering of belowground chemical and microbial diversity in cover crops, and the development of sustainable biofertilizers to enhance plant growth. ? The Industry Roundtable featured experts from Valent BioSciences, Trace Genomics, Syngenta Group, and Pivot Bio, discussing current industry challenges, needs, and the importance of public-private collaborations in advancing phytobiomes science. ? The day concluded with a thought-provoking Industry Career Discussion, focusing on the skills needed to build a successful career in the Ag industry and the current needs in the field. The conversation also explored the role the Phytobiomes Alliance could play in fostering the next generation of leaders and ensuring a robust pool of scientists for future industry roles. ? ?? Day 2 of the International Phytobiomes Conference 2024 is complete! ?? Today’s theme, "Harnessing Interactions and Influences within the Phytobiomes," brought together groundbreaking science and practical applications: Plenary highlights: - Terrence Bell explored how environmental conditioning impacts microbial survival and function, providing critical insights into phytobiome management. - James Lowenberg-DeBoer presented a fascinating overview of the latest innovations in digital technologies to manage phytobiomes systems and argued that these tools will make sustainable agriculture more accessible. The talks, poster flash talks and panel discussions covered a wide range of subjects, showcasing the broad range of phytobiome science. A few examples: - Engineering microbiomes to protect crops against insects. - The role of aromatic acids in plant-microbe interactions - Maize pollen microbiome - Beneficial fungi to mitigate iron deficiency in pea - Interaction between soil fungal communities and soybean cyst nematodes - The role of microbial networks in nutrient availability - Impact of domestication on crop microbiomes - Cover crop effects on soybean health and associated rhizosphere microbiome After a full day of inspiring talks, the Gala Dinner, sponsored by Bayer, offered a great opportunity to enjoy delicious food and exchange ideas in the beautiful setting of the Missouri History Museum. #Phytobiomes2024

Kickoff Plenary: Gwyn Beattie (Iowa State University) shared groundbreaking insights into how climate and plant-insect-bacteria interactions influence emerging plant diseases. ?? Panel on Agriculture & Sustainability: Experts from Plenty?, United Soybean Board, 80 Acres Farms and Bayer CropScience S.A. shared perspectives on advancing sustainable practices in production agriculture. ?? Morning Plenary: Catherine Feuillet (Inari) delivered a thought-provoking talk on the need of radical innovation to address food system challenges. ?? Afternoon Plenary: Francesca Cotrufo (Colorado State University) offered a systemic approach to regenerating soil organic matter, showcasing its potential to enhance both climate resilience and food production. ??? Regulatory Working Group: A critical conversation on navigating regulatory frameworks for biopesticides and biological-based crop protection products, featuring USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) and industry leaders. ?? Talks and Poster Flash Talks: on rhizosphere dynamics, the impact of farming practices on microbial community, predictive models and emerging tools to support grower’s decisions, showcasing the depth of research in the phytobiome space. ??
