It has been another BUSY week at The George Washington University Elliott School of International Affairs (ESIA), with not one but, TWO site visits! On Tuesday, we traveled to the beautiful and historic campus of the Meridian International Center, and were hosted by our incredible GW ESIA alumni Morgan Quijano (MA-IA '20) & Steven Greenwald (BA-IA '19) who were joined by colleagues Nakeeya Garland, Lola Owokoniran and my fellow Missourian, Ryan Oberlag (a MSU grad and Fulton, MO native!) It was a great visit that included a tour of the historic properties and simulation exercise of the value of work that Meridian brings through cultural diplomacy. That discussion almost seamlessly led into our Wednesday's Career Panel installment of "Pivoting to the Private Sector" with a focus on the intersection of Arts and International Affairs, where we were joined by cultural diplomats representing The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, National Gallery of Art, International Arts & Artists, and Rick Steves' Europe! Special thanks to our panelists, Greg Houston, K. Laurie McKay, Chris Abanavas, Travis Smith Parker -many of whom stayed to consult with students and offer private sector focused resume reviews, and our moderator, GW's own Kari K Scott, who led the discussion exploring roles that we don't always think of when it comes to the soft power of Arts and International Relations! We wrapped up our week with a Site Visit to the United States Institute of Peace with 20 ESIA students and staff, who enjoyed a tour of the beautiful space before hearing from USIP staff of the history of the organization -which dates back to George Washington's goal of creating a Peace Academy (to complement West Point's Military Academy, GO ARMY!) and the location of USIP, in the very spot that President Washington had originally intended. Students learned of the educational collaboration that exists with Elliott School and USIP and, the role USIP leads in advocating for and brokering peace and the value of conflict resolution through practice of the DIME instruments of national power (Diplomatic, Informational, Military and Economic). Thank you to all of the wonderful presenters and alumni who are supporting our students and challenging them to think in new ways as they pursue their career in international affairs! #esiagss #WeAreElliott
