International Students Overcoming War (ISOW) is a student-led and student-funded humanitarian initiative at WLU.

关于我们

ISOW is a student-led and student-funded humanitarian initiative at Wilfrid Laurier University that provides full scholarships to international students living in conflict zones. ISOW’s scholarship fund is supported through contributions from three sources: Laurier students, Wilfrid Laurier University, and our partner organizations. Since beginning the initiative in 2014, we have successfully partnered with 9 organizations, and we are actively looking for more partners. Every semester, Laurier students pay up to $8 to help support bright students whose education has been negatively impacted by conflict. The ISOW scholarship is managed, and the initiative’s daily operations are overseen by ISOW’s management team, a team of over 20 student volunteers. ISOW’s Faculty Advisor and Program Assistants also provide guidance and support to the Management Team. Since 2015, ISOW has sponsored over 42 scholars affected by conflict from 9 different countries of origin. This initiative not only allows us to impact the lives of our Scholars, but these remarkable scholars also impact our lives and make Laurier a stronger community.

  • Over the past few years, ISOW has had the privilege of visiting various MPs, Ministers, and Senators from the Canadian Government in Ottawa. This year, we have the opportunity to visit again and request support for our ISOW Education Complementary Pathway. Check out the video attached, where some of our students from Wilfrid Laurier University describe some of our requests. Follow us on Instagram and Twitter to follow our advocacy journey in Ottawa next week from April 29th to May 3rd! #isowimpact #studentsaspartners #isowinottawa #ottawa2024

  • ISOW had the opportunity to attend the two-day gathering in Washington, D.C., which focused on launching and scaling complementary education pathways and on sharing comparative approaches and lessons learned from the Americas, including the recent launch of Welcome Corps on Campus in the U.S. This event brought together institutions and stakeholders involved in building or expanding education pathways programs, highlighting seasoned initiatives in the Americas. ISOW's participation underscored its dedication to enhancing educational opportunities for displaced students and fostering global collaboration. Through active engagement in discussions and workshops, ISOW gained valuable insights into innovative strategies and best practices for supporting refugee education. These insights, with their potential to influence global refugee education, were a testament to the collective impact of the international community. They learned and talked about successful program implementations, effective policy advocacy, and the importance of community involvement in creating sustainable education pathways. These learnings will be instrumental in refining ISOW's initiatives and expanding their impact, ensuring that more refugee students have access to the education they deserve. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Global Task Force on Third Country Education Pathways and the Institute of International Education for co-hosting this incredible conference and enabling us to attend. It was an excellent opportunity for ISOW to learn from the various stakeholders who attended and share the vital work and unique initiatives that ISOW runs through Wilfrid Laurier University.?

On June 25 and 26, 2024, the Global Task Force on Third Country Education Pathways (GTF) and IIE co-hosted a Community of Practice Convening at IIE’s office in Washington, D.C. Forty-two representatives from 14 countries attended to discuss policy and practical strategies for launching and scaling refugee complementary education pathways. Complementary education pathways are safe and regulated avenues for refugees to travel from their country of asylum to a third country to pursue tertiary education. Launched in May 2020, the GTF promotes and supports the expansion of higher education as a complementary pathway for refugee students. Only 7% of college-aged refugees have access to higher education compared to 41% among the general population. Through its signature initiatives such as the Odyssey Scholarship, IIE has issued more than 2,300 scholarships, fellowships, and grants to displaced students, scholars, and artists from Africa, Latin America, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and other regions. Learn more about GTF at edpathways.org.

  • From April 29 to May 3, 2024, ISOW conducted an advocacy trip to Ottawa to advance our mission of supporting refugee and at-risk students. Our team of dedicated student leaders proposed a formal partnership between ISOW and the Federal Government, envisioning an expanded role for education in providing protection and opportunities to deserving young people worldwide. Higher Education institutions are home to socially conscious staff and students, yet it remains challenging for leaders to commit the necessary resources to build programs that ensure access to education. Since 2017, ISOW has actively engaged with the Federal Government of Canada to explore how this model can be adopted by other universities to create a nationwide education pathway that complements the Government’s existing commitment to promote private sponsorship of refugees. Check out our blog post, which summarizes our activities, key learnings, and meetings with influential policymakers and organizations. Additionally, stay tuned for an upcoming video showcasing our trip! 2024 Ottawa Advocacy Trip (isow.ca)
