Reconnecting Siblings: Staying close despite the distance Miguel and Juan, two brothers separated after a family tragedy, ended up in two different countries—Miguel in the U.S. and Juan in Mexico. Working on behalf of the state who was overseeing Miguel’s placement, ISS-USA helped locate his brother Juan, in Mexico. ISS-USA advocated for the brothers to have regular calls and a face to face visit over a school holiday. Keeping siblings connected, even across borders, is vital for their well-being. Your $100 donation helps us reunite more siblings like Miguel and Juan, and thanks to our 1-to-1 match during November and December, your gift will be doubled! Every dollar goes twice as far in keeping family bonds strong. ?? #100for100 #FamilyReunification #ISSUSA ?? Support family reunification today: https://lght.ly/gda04hb

On Wednesday, October 9, ISS hosted an international conference in Geneva, marking its 100th anniversary, Throughout time, Across borders: Navigating child protection and restoring family links. Carolyn Housman of ISS UK (CFAB), far right, spoke about Equity in Permanency as part of a panel discussion addressing the importance of prioritizing family and kin when children become separated from their caregivers. She emphasized the necessity of this, even when family or kin live across a border.

As we conclude Cross Border Family Reunification Week, we want to underscore this key message: Every child has the right to grow up surrounded by love, support, within in their own culture and family, regardless of their location (assuming safety, of course). Equity in permanency recognizes the unique challenges faced by cross-border families and emphasizes the need for policies and practices that take the extra step to ensure that family and kinship placements are explored and carried out (in the best interest of the child) even when it means placing a child across a border. As more and more people support kinship care and family reintegration, please work with us to ensure that these practices also apply in the same way to cross border families!
