Anthony Caro (born March 8, 1924) played a pivotal role in the development of twentieth century sculpture. After studying sculpture at the Royal Academy Schools in London, he worked as an assistant to Henry Moore. He came to public attention with a show at the Whitechapel Gallery in 1963, where he exhibited large abstract sculptures brightly painted and standing directly on the ground. As we get closer to the Night of Excellence on April 16, we will be highlighting work by our 2025 Lifetime Achievement Award recipients, Albert Paley and Jaume Plensa. Albert Paley’s Portal Gates mark a turning point in his career. With the 1974 construction of the Gates, Paley expanded his studio and shifted his attention to ironwork and architectural ornamentation. Interested in joining us in April?
