The International Rescue Committee provides opportunities for refugees, asylees, victims of human trafficking, survivors of torture, and other immigrants to thrive in America. Each year, thousands of people, forced to flee violence and persecution, are welcomed by the people of the United States into the safety and freedom of America. These individuals have survived against incredible odds. The IRC collaborates closely with government bodies, civil society actors, and local volunteers to support refugees, asylum-seekers, and other immigrants in San Diego, as they work to rebuild their lives.

    The IRC in San Diego presents: International Documentary Screening in Encinitas!??? On August 22, 2024, we invite you for our Inaugural Summer Film Screening where the Champions of the Golden Valley will make its San Diego debut at La Paloma Theatre, Encinitas, San Diego. Doors open at 6:00PM, and the screening will begin at 6:30. The screening will be attended by some of the members of the creative team behind the film! You don't want to miss this remarkable event!??? ? INTERESTED??? "The film follows the story of Alishah Farhang who set out on a mission to bring competitive skiing to the ancient mountain town of Bamyan, Afghanistan. However, following the shocking collapse of the Afghan government at the hands of the Taliban in 2021, Alishah is forced to flee, leaving his beloved home country to face an uncertain future. Director Ben Sturgulewski captures an Afghanistan that few outsiders ever see in his exuberant debut feature film. A unique story that goes beyond skiing, Champions of the Golden Valley is about resilience, finding joy amidst difficult circumstances and what it means to be a champion." – Andrea Passafiume

  • Happy #SmallBusiness Saturday!? This week we’d like to spotlight Genemo Ali, founder of Ali’s Chicken and Waffles. Genemo and his family settled in San Diego as refugees from Ethiopia when he was a young boy. In 2020, he founded Ali’s Chicken and Waffles, offering a menu with everything from classic fried chicken to Ethiopian and Thai teas. All his food is halal, making it both extra fresh and accessible to many communities in San Diego county. In 2023, Genemo received support through the IRC SBDC Small Business Development Center. In the program, Genemo worked with a business counselor to apply to CEO Center for Economic Opportunity for a business loan. With this loan secured, Genemo has been able to hire new staff and ensure the success of a second location! ???? We celebrate the success of Ali’s Chicken and Waffles, and are proud to have been a part of Genemo’s journey!
