The UK’s specialist think tank on the impact of longevity on society, and what happens next.
关于我们
The ILC is the UK’s specialist think tank on the impact of longevity on society, and what happens next. We believe society has to adapt now so we can all enjoy the benefits of longevity. We work with central government, local government, the private sector, and professional and academic associations in the UK and across the world to provoke conversations and pioneer solutions for a society where everyone can thrive, regardless of age. We know the numbers. We know the challenges. What happens next will define us for generations.

Death rates for young adults have been rising for more than a decade! ? In yesterday's post and BBC News coverage I focussed on overall UK death rates, which were back on the pre-pandemic trend in 2024. However, I highlighted dramatic variation by age group. ? Today I want to focus more on the differences between age-groups. ? The picture for pensioners is the same as the overall picture - death rates are back on trend and reached a record low. It makes sense that the picture is the same since most deaths occur at older ages. ? At middle age, the picture is more concerning. Pre-pandemic death rates were quite stable year-to-year but death rates have been higher since the onset of the pandemic and have not reverted to the previous level. There's a link in the comments to work I've done on this previously. ? But for young adults the picture is arguably even worse. For men aged 20-44, death rates have been increasing since 2012. This is driven by deaths from external causes, such as accidents and suicides. For young women, death rates were stable before the pandemic but have not reverted to the previous level subsequently. ? The very different trends by age are relevant to the ongoing consultation from the Continuous Mortality Investigation on the future of the model. The proposal is to adapt the model to better reflect these trends.?At LCP we are pleased to see this development as the proposed model will more closely reflect our house view, shaped by input from our LCP Health Analytics colleagues.

New ILC research published today finds that serious mental health conditions are hampering people’s ability to live more fulfilling long lives. The ???????? ?????? ?????? ???????report suggests: ?? Older people are less likely to access mental health services due to ageism – although the mental health burden is similar to that of other age groups and treatment has been proven to be effective ?? On average, people worldwide lose over a week (7.2 days) a year to mental health-related disabilities ?? This has huge economic ramifications – 4.2% of GDP is lost to mental health conditions across OECD countries every year To address these issues, ILC urges policymakers to adopt a life course and person-centred approach to improve mental health support across people’s longer lives. Research interviews and roundtable discussions have informed the report’s findings as part of the ILC’s ???????????? ???????????? ?????????????? project, funded by Boehringer Ingelheim. The "Mind the Age Gap" report highlights a pressing issue: older adults often face significant barriers to accessing mental health care. This aligns with the principle of?Oneness, reminding us that mental health affects all age groups and that everyone deserves support. The principle of?Thought?emphasises the importance of creating innovative solutions tailored to the unique needs of older individuals. Finally,?Feeling?reinforces the need for compassion and understanding in addressing these challenges. It would be wonderful if people could read the full report and reflect on how we can collectively advocate for mental health resources for all ages. How can we better support the mental well-being of our older community members?

ILC/CEA Industry Day We are launching our first post on LinkedIn with an exciting news! Few weeks ago, the Centre for excellence on ageing (CEA) at the University of Surrey took a significant step forward in shaping the future of ageing by collaborating with International Longevity Centre UK (ILC) for a pivotal event in London. This brought some of our CEA Fellows together with industry and business leaders to discuss challenges and opportunities around healthy ageing. ? From the role of AI in transforming healthcare, immunity and ageing to envisioning digital tools that support wellbeing, the discussions were as diverse as they were thought provoking. We explored everything from financial services for older generations to the need for inclusive approaches to ageing in different communities and the importance of housing and older people’s needs. The event sparked new ideas, and even whether we need to think completely differently about ageing and retirement. This is just the beginning, as we continue to unite experts across sectors, we are committed to advancing healthier, more inclusive ways to ageing both for today and for the future. A heartfelt thank you to all our industry guests and academic experts who contributed to the event (some of them are tagged here).
