'#Sustainable #Geotechnics for Transport Infrastructure' was the title of a recent workshop held in Portugal, hosted by the IGS's TC-Stabilization and the ISSMGE's TC-Transportation Geotechnics (TC202). The workshop addressed fundamental issues such as sustainable materials and construction processes for #transportation #infrastructure, as well as geotechnical challenges and innovations aimed at enhancing resilience and adaptability of transport assets, infrastructure, routes, networks, and systems. Presentations on the environmental advantages of using #geosynthetics in transport projects were shared by notable IGS experts Erol Tutumluer, Jorge Zornberg and Xuecheng Bian. This year marked the exciting debut of the #GeoJeopardy competition, testing young engineers’ knowledge of #geosynthetics in a lively quiz show format! The competition at #GeoAmericas2024 featured live rounds, with expert geosynthetics professionals acting as quizmasters, guiding student teams through a series of heats during the conference. Curious about what GeoJeopardy entails? It’s inspired by the classic American #Jeopardy! game show, flipping Q&A formats to keep contestants on their toes – they must answer with a question! For example, when prompted with “1983,” the correct response would be: “What year was the IGS established?” The goal is to foster student engagement at events and advance geosynthetics knowledge worldwide. In November 1977, what became known as the 1st International Conference on Geosynthetics (1 ICG) was held in Paris, France. In the 47 years since that first gathering (seen here with Dr. JP Giroud in the center), the field of geosynthetics and the International Geosynthetics Society (IGS) have engaged all sectors of civil engineering and contributed beneficially to lower infrastructure costs, extend infrastructure service lives, and improve sustainability, climate change response, and environmental protection. Publication of the special edition ‘Geosynthetics and Sustainability’. The magazine Geobuild is with this edition fully dedicated to the International Symposium hosted at the Technical University Delft. The symposium was organised by the NGO - IGS Netherlands in collaboration with the IGS Foundation, the International Geosynthetics Society (IGS), TU Delft | Civil Engineering and Geosciences and Deltares. The symposium served as a platform for knowledge exchange on geosynthetics and sustainability. Distinguished speakers provided insights into the latest research and applications. The IGS Educate the Educators (ETE) program aims to ensure that every student graduating from an undergraduate engineering program receives some basic exposure to #geosynthetics. The program shows university teaching staff how the core principles of geosynthetics can be incorporated into their existing curricula and provides them with the materials to do so.
