What is simultaneously saving space and lowering Nashville's #carbonfootprint? ? It's the Metro Nashville District Energy System (aka the DES)! ? The system, just over 50 years old, now utilizes a 91,000-foot network of underground pipes to heat and cool more than 40 Metro, state and privately-owned buildings in downtown Nashville. the DES delivers #chilledwater and #steam to provide clean and #reliable resources to Nashville while out of sight and underground. ? Hooking up to the DES has saved buildings acres of space that otherwise would have been filled with large individual HVAC units. The DES is not only more #energy-efficient that centralized systems, but also helped reduce additional maintenance that is typically required. ? So next time you find yourself in Nashville, maybe at Bridgestone Arena or Ryman Auditorium, know that you are enjoying the benefits of the DES.

You’re probably familiar with the #steam rising from orange stacks in New York City, but #DYK those stacks are only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to NYC’s #districtenergy #steamsystem, which is made up of a 106-mile underground network that stretches nearly the entire length of Manhattan? ? As reporter?Linda Poon writes in a new article in?Bloomberg CityLab, the network, operated by IDEA member?Con Edison is also central to the city’s #decarbonization plans. As Con Ed’s?Amy Haag notes in the article, legislation such as #LocalLaw97 and New York state’s energy goals have district energy poised for growth. ? But, New York is certainly not alone in this, the article also discusses IDEA member?Vicinity Energy’s system in Boston, and its industrial-scale electric boiler and carbon-free #eSteam, as well as its plans for a massive #heatpump to harvest #thermalenergy from the Charles River. ? As IDEA President & CEO Rob Thornton says in the article, district energy systems are continuously being modernized?and updated.?Going forward, downtown district energy systems will incorporate lower-carbon solutions like industrial-scale electric boilers, heat pumps, thermal storage and other technologies to accelerate the energy transition. ? District energy is the vehicle that brings these technologies to cities, college and university campuses and other networks of buildings – helping them decarbonize at scale, while also maintaining a #resilient and #reliable #energy supply. Cambridge Mayor Denise Simmons said it best when quoting an old proverb, "If you want to go far, go together." This week IDEA member, Vicinity Energy, the State of Massachusetts, the City of Cambridge and the City of Boston entered a new era of urban #decarbonization with the installation of its new 42MW industrial-scale electric boiler. With this new #innovation, Vicinity can provide carbon-free thermal energy to its Boston partners by taking advantage of 26 miles of pipes that run underneath the city — Boston's #districtenergy system. The "eBoiler" is the largest in North America and is capable of decarbonizing the equivalent of 30 Prudential Centers, one of Boston's most recognizable landmarks. Congrats?to the Vicinity Team on this amazing achievement! #Sustainability

Great panel takeaways Carlyle Coutinho! ? Thanks to you, the team at Enwave Energy Corporation, and many of other members we're able to see #districtenergy make a difference in communities. Lakeview Village and Etobicoke Civic Centre are great examples of the #affordable, #reliable, and #sustainable projects across the district energy industry.?
In a market that has high demand for energy and considerable constraints on current and future supply, district energy is a difference maker. - Deep Lake Water Cooling displaces over 60MW from the grid, saving significant electrons. - Lakeview village is expected to take 40 percent less electricity than status quo. - our Geo-exchange district at Etobicoke Civic Centre will peak at least 30 percent lower than a traditional system. District energy is critical to an affordable, reliable, sustainable and efficent grid expansion. It’s vital that the electricity grid incorporates the value of district energy into future procurements. Ontario is working on an integrated energy plan…looking forward to Enwave Energy Corporation being an important part of the process and solutions… A unique perspective from our panel at the National Energy Roundtable in Toronto on Thursday. Great discussion on how we can approach new procurement with some industry friends…Arne Wohlschlegel, ICD.D Matt Cronin Robyn Gray Some of my learnings… OEM suppliers: They are focussed on high volume equipment that is less customized given the sheer volume of demand. Constructors: Must be discerning on choosing jobs that are high likelihood with large markets for future growth. Scale matters. Have to walk away from some opportunities given the labour constraints. ?? “Making use of waste heat will make data centers more efficient.” An insightful read from Adele Peters in a new article in Fast Company details the way #districtheating is not only #cuttingcosts for local communities but also mitigating the environmental impact of the #datacenter boom. From heating the Olympic pool in Paris to heating residential communities around the world, #districtenergy offers real sustainability solutions. Congrats to Westbank Corp on the application submission. We’re looking forward to your progress! Read the full article in the comments below:

#DYK Chicago is home to the largest ice battery system in North America? IDEA member CenTrio operates this system, which serves the city’s commercial office spaces, residential properties, hotels, government buildings, entertainment facilities, schools and data centers! The ice battery is also one of the many innovative ways that Thermal Energy Storage (TES) is utilized in #districtenergy.? For over 40 years, #TES has provided the following advantages to the systems in which they are installed: - Accelerated #decarbonization? - Enhanced resiliency and efficiency? - Energy and operational cost savings? - Micro and Macro #gridsupport If you’re interested in learning more about TES benefits, take a look at our handbook linked in the comments!?

We are just days away from #COP29, where countries are set to announce new national #climate commitments. #Districtenergy has an important role to play in helping make those commitments a reality.? ? The 2015 Paris Agreement solidified 198 countries’ pact to lower greenhouse gas emissions and limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius above the pre-industrial level. However, recent reports find the Paris Agreement has led to the world heating the planet by close to 3 degrees Celsius by 2100.?? ? To effectively reach and maintain these goals, it’s crucial to leverage tactics at scale.? District energy’s ability to aggregate clean heating and cooling solutions, innovative #decarbonization strategies and integration with the latest renewable fuel sources and technology allow us to play a critical role in reaching long-term carbon emission goals across the built environment. ??????
