Thanks to our great partner Fundación Cepaim in Spain for co-hosting with International Detention Coalition a successful Roundtable with representatives from the Government of Spain, local government of the Canary Islands, the Ombuds office, the UN and CSOs. It was encouraging to have an honest conversation about Alternatives to Detention and current challenges and opportunities. There is a lot that can be done and we look forward to exploring further the opportunities. Ha sido también un placer trabajar en mi idioma nativo y recibir tanta hospitalidad. Es muy importante ver cómo el gobierno de Canarias y Espa?a siguen explorando soluciones y oportunidades a pesar de los retos que existen. La implementación de una agenda de derechos que priorice a las migrantes y los migrantes es muy importante. Las alternativas contra la detención pueden ser parte de estos esfuerzos. Thanks to the Colombia Permanent Mission to the UN and the Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD) secretariat for organising the first consultations in preparation for the GFMD in Geneva this week and for ensuring the different roundtables were innovative and focused on content. Thanks also to the GFMD Civil Society Mechanism and Migration Youth & Children Platform for developing an inclusive consultation process in preparation for the round tables. International Detention Coalition is delighted to co facilitate the working group on children and youth with Migration Youth & Children Platform and to participate in the working group on women, migration and development and in the dialogues on regional cooperation and new technologies and digitalization. We are pleased to be in this process and we look forward to further preparations to the Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD). I am also personally delighted that it will take place in my country, Colombia, that has championed so many good policies on migration including on regularisation and is a key ally in advocating against immigration detention and promoting alternatives. Great also to spend time with Jenna Hennebry, Rossy from IMUMI, Bloque Latinoamericano and Women in Migration Network, and other wonderful colleagues and advocates. We will continue advocating for migrants rights, gender equality and child protection which are more needed than ever during these challenging times.

Congratulations to Migration Youth & Children Platform for the launch of impact report. So inspired by the youth leaders and as mentioned in my presentation they are the present and the future! International Detention Coalition is delighted to work with them on joint advocacy for migrant rights!

Thank you to IOM - UN Migration West Africa and to the Network of Legal Experts on Migration in West and Central Africa NoLEM for inviting me to participate in the launch of the publication on Analysing Migrant Detention Legal Frameworks: Perspectives from West and Central Africa in Dakar, Senegal earlier this week. Immigration detention has devastating effects on people, it’s costly and ineffective. It doesn’t have to be this way and there are alternatives. There is a lot of momentum in this region for implementing alternatives to detention (ATD) in the community, that contribute to the rights, health and well-being of migrants, do not affect compliance and are a fraction of the cost of immigration detention. This is a win-win solution for people on the move and for governments. Let’s make use of this momentum and implement ATD. International Detention Coalition looks forward to working with NoLEM and IOM - UN Migration on exploring ATD in this region. I was also honoured to contribute with an article in the publication on immigration detention global trends, ATD opportunities and examples of promising practice on Africa and other regions with my colleague Lilian Obiye There is no time to waste. We need to move towards governance systems away from detention and looking at rights and pathways for people on the move.
