Join us at Resourcing Tomorrow next week! On Tuesday 3 December, ICMM’s CEO Rohitesh Dhawan, will deliver an opening keynote, exploring how the mining industry, through the consolidation of standards, can break out of its echo chamber and drive meaningful change. Later that day, ICMM’s Innovation Director Bryony Clear Hill will?speak alongside President, CEO & Director of CoTec Julian Treger and John Carr, CEO of Future Element, on a panel on how circular thinking can transform tailings management. Together, they’ll discuss how principles taken from the circular economy have the potential to unlock sustainable, safer and more profitable pathways to mitigating mine-waste. Dedicated to a safe, fair, and sustainable mining and metals industry.
关于我们
ICMM's vision is a safe, just and sustainable world enabled by responsibly produced minerals and metals. Each of our company members – which together account for one-third of the global mining and metals industry – commits to implementing our Mining Principles as a condition of membership. These principles are neither static nor do they represent the ceiling of our ambition. We are always challenging ourselves to go ever further in setting the highest of standards for responsible mining, and delivery. We promise to work collaboratively with associations and other stakeholders to enhance the contribution of mining and metals to sustainable development. Our commitment to working with others does not stop at our industry’s boundaries. We were founded on a spirit of open engagement, and we continue to champion diversity of opinions today to deliver bold leadership for our wider industry and non-resources sectors alike.

Most things needed for a sustainable future – wind turbines, solar panels, electric vehicles – are metal intensive. Reaching net zero by 2050 will require an estimated 3 billion tonnes of metals to support the clean energy transition. To meet demand while staying on track with the world’s sustainable development goals, we need to embrace circularity — focusing on both the production and use of metals. ICMM’s Senior Manager, Marcus Addy, joined a panel discussion at an Oxfam side-event as part of the United Nations Annual Forum in Geneva to share his insights how companies can better integrate human rights defenders into their due diligence, stakeholder engagement and security processes. The discussion focused on the importance of collective industry action and the need to implement industry standards to drive the positive change needed.? ? This timely discussion followed yesterday's launch of our strengthened membership commitments on human rights defenders and new human rights due diligence tools. These tools are free for all to use on the ICMM website and have been designed to help companies identify and address human rights risks.? ? Learn more here: https://lnkd.in/ed5Af_tS

Ahead of the 13th United Nations Annual Forum on Business and Human Rights, we have announced strengthened commitments to respect and recognise the important role of human rights defenders. Everyone deserves to be treated with dignity and respect, and mining companies have a responsibility to uphold human rights. Recognising the vital role human rights defenders play in promoting and protecting human rights, ICMM has strengthened its member commitments to include defenders explicitly in companies’ due diligence, stakeholder engagement, and security processes. To further support companies in doing so and to build awareness of the right to a clean, health and sustainable environment, ICMM has also launched three new human rights due diligence tools. ICMM’s Marcus Addy will be speaking ?on a panel at an Oxfam side-event at the UN Annual Forum on business and Human Rights tomorrow where he will discuss ICMM's work on human rights defenders. Congratulations to Danielle Martin, our Co-Chief Operating Officer & Director or Social Performance, who has been recognised as part of Women In Mining UK (WIM UK)'s WIM100 Initiative! Danielle has been instrumental in driving ICMM’s work on diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) in the last three years. This includes the collective commitment made by our members last year to improve DEI in the industry and positively influence the communities that that mining companies are a part of. As a key member of the ICMM team, we are delighted she was given this recognition for the contribution she is making to the mining industry. Nature loss is a critical global challenge, placing the survival, health, wellbeing, and livelihoods of people and the planet at risk. As we work to meet the growing demand for materials essential to the energy transition and sustainable development, we recognise the importance of Nature & Biodiversity Day at #COP29! ?? And reaffirm our commitment to ensuring that progress does not come at the expense of nature or the communities that depend on it. In January, ICMM members made a landmark commitment towards a nature positive future, focusing on four areas of influence: direct operations, value chains, landscapes and systems transformation, all supported by transparency. Population growth, social progress and clean energy technologies are increasing demand for minerals and metals. Increasing the circularity of mining and metals value chains will help us to sustainably and responsibly meet the growing demand for metals ?? In September, ICMM launched its new Tools for Circularity to help mining and metals companies minimise waste and maximise value throughout every stage of the life cycle, from sourcing, to production, to use and recovery. Water is essential for the extraction, processing and transformation of the minerals and metals critical to the energy transition ?? As an industry, we take to heart our responsibility for stewarding this precious, shared natural resource, ensuring that our use is socially equitable and environmentally sustainable. ICMM’s Water Stewardship Maturity Framework presents leading practices and real-world examples to help mining and metals companies advance their management of water. ICMM’s CEO Rohitesh Dhawan was speaking at the IGF 20th Annual General Meeting in Geneva today where he reflected on the challenges of developing a global traceability mechanism - a crucial but ambitious goal. Learn more:
I talked about my breakfast this morning to explain mining to 80+ governments at the UN in Geneva today ?? Just like you can't trace individual pieces of the banana that was blended into my green smoothie I wolfed down this morning, it's impossible today to - at scale - track and trace a mineral from underground to your phone. Ores and concentrates from different mined and recycled sources are often blended together to produce the materials that end up in our everyday products. This was in response to a question about how we can deliver Actionable Recommendation 2 from the UN Secretary General's Panel on Critical Minerals i.e. the development of a global traceability mechanism. It's a noble and important vision, with exciting pockets of progress like the Global Battery Alliance, but doing it at scale will need major breakthroughs, much of which I think will come from outside the sector. Thanks Greg Radford and IGFMining for having me, and congrats on your 20th Anniversary!

Data science techniques are helping the mining and metals industry make sense of vast amounts of information, enabling them to refine and redefine processes to better prepare for the impacts of climate change. This knowledge is also essential for supporting the prosperity of communities worldwide. Yet, with nearly half of the global population still lacking internet access, an inequality in resilience remains clear. ICMM members recognise their potential to support governments in developing ICT skills and infrastructure in their areas of operation, contributing to countries’ efforts to achieve their sustainable development goals. Discover how mining companies can strengthen climate resilience for their operations and surrounding communities in our joint publication with the IFC: https://lnkd.in/g6_6-vhD
