ICRW is proud to partner with UNESCO to launch a report on initiatives that engage men and boys for gender equality in India. As we prepare for the report’s release in the coming days, we want to share a key recommendation: the importance of starting early when engaging men and boys. ? Over the past two decades, our research and programming have consistently shown that it’s easier to work with men and boys when they are younger. At a young age, they are more receptive, have more time, and demonstrate greater openness to changing their attitudes and behaviors. This insight has led us to adapt our programs to focus on boys in classes 6 to 8, addressing issues of gender and masculinities. We are also exploring ways to engage even younger boys to maximize long-term impact. ? From our experience, starting early helps shape attitudes before rigid gender norms take hold, fostering a generation that values equality and respect. What has your experience been? ?? Hope. Determination. Solidarity. ?? The conclusion of the 2024 US election poses a profoundly challenging moment for the women’s rights and gender justice communities around the world. After a campaign season saturated with misogynistic and racist rhetoric and concluding with the election of leaders who espouse a deeply patriarchal and authoritarian worldview, many of us are rightfully anxious about the fate of women and marginalized communities around the world. For nearly 50 years ICRW has led research to make the case for why gender equity is necessary for our collective prosperity and security. The election results show us just *how* contested that premise is. So, we have some serious work to do. Kamala Harris reminded us in her concession speech that hard work is good work. ?? The fight for #SRHR is never over ?? In a new commentary for Sexual and Reproductive Health Matters journal, Evelyne Opondo, ICRW Africa Director, Jade Maina, Trust for Indigenous Culture and Health (TICAH) Executive Director, and Nelly Munyasia Reproductive Health Network Kenya Executive Director, dissect the current landscape and propose a path forward through collaboration. ?? ?? ?? In the piece, they note that anti-rights actors are increasingly infiltrating policy-making spaces, using tactics that undermine established rights and hinder access to comprehensive sexual & reproductive health services. This coordinated effort shows how foreign governments and religious groups are shaping policies against the backdrop of international agreements. In Kenya and across Africa, anti-rights legislation is gaining traction. Not only are these groups reshaping laws, but are also silencing the voices of those advocating for SRHR. Collaboration across sectors—combining legal advocacy, community mobilization, and healthcare expertise—is crucial in countering these anti-rights movements. Initiatives like the “Nakuru Strategy” in Kenya and the MAMA network illustrate the power of collective action and solidarity. By fostering stronger alliances across movements—such as #abortionrights advocates working with #LGBTQI+ organizations— and elevating African voices, we can enhance our collective impact and enact real change for the communities we aim to serve. ?? Today is the International Day of the Girl Child! At ICRW, we are dedicated to producing action-oriented research and strategies that uplift women and girls in all their diversity. Our work spans critical issues like economic opportunity, health and reproductive rights, gender norms, and climate action, all aimed at shaping policies for a more inclusive world. In celebration of this important day, we’d like to highlight two recent projects focused on empowering girls ?? ??Developed by International Center for Research on Women - Asia, the UMANG initiative supports girls in the Godda and Jamtara districts of Jharkhand, India. With backing from the IKEA Foundation and local partners, UMANG works to improve school retention and reduce child marriage. Centered on the rights of adolescent girls, the program enhances their agency through creative strategies such as sports and street plays.
