As part of my long term career goals, I recently completed the International Board of Disaster Medicine certification exam and am now a Fellow of the International Board of Disaster Medicine. Fantastic course taught by Gregory Ciottone, MD, FACEP, FIBODM, FFSEM, which built on the education and training I received from Lynchburg Doctor of Medical Science Program (DMSc) and Travis Kaufman, DMSc, APA-C, Rob Gray, DMSc, Frank Caruso, Elyse (Edwards) Watkins, DHSc, PA-C, DFAAPA, NCMP, and Jon B. Christensen. Thanks Jessie Hockett, DMSc, PA-C for the motivation and being the first of our class to go through the process! Disaster medicine professionals are equipped to bring order to disorder and hope to despair. The reward lies not just in the lives saved, but in the profound impact of serving communities at their most vulnerable moments.

We’re excited to announce an incredible new opportunity for our University of Lynchburg DMSc community! We’ve secured a collaborative agreement with the International Board of Disaster Medicine (IBODM) and the Harvard Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) Fellowship in Disaster Medicine. This partnership unlocks tremendous possibilities for both our students and alumni. To officially kick off this initiative, the University of Lynchburg School of Medicine and Health Sciences will host a “Fireside Chat” Friday, August 16th @ 5:00pm (EST). Dr. Travis Kaufman, DMSc, APA-C will moderate the conversation and our guest speaker, Dr. Gregory Ciottone, will share an overview of the certification and insights into this exciting collaboration. Dr. Gregory Ciottone, MD, FIBODM is President Emeritus of the World Association for Disaster and Emergency Medicine, and an Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine at Harvard Medical School. He is an Instructor at the Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health (HSPH), and the Founding Director of the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center Fellowship in Disaster Medicine, where he has trained more than 120 postdoctoral fellows, many of whom are now in leadership positions in the US and around the world. His field experience includes over 25 years as a practicing emergency physician and more than 500 missions as a flight surgeon on an aeromedical helicopter service. He has conducted training programs in over 30 countries around the world, and has published over 150 peer-reviewed journal articles on Emergency Management and Disaster Medicine in addition to his textbook “Ciottone’s Disaster Medicine”, now in its 3rd edition and considered the leading textbook in the field. Passed my 3rd Board and pleased to be a Fellow of the International Board of Disaster Medicine

I am glad to share that I have successfully passed my exams and officially become board-certified as a Fellow of the International Board of Disaster Medicine (FIBODM) from the International Board of Disaster Medicine (IBODM)! I am grateful to the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center / Harvard Medical School - Disaster Medicine Fellowship Program for their ongoing support over the last 13 years. I hope to impart my knowledge, experience, and insights to next-generation healthcare professionals and, in doing so, contribute to the provision of quality emergency care in disasters, conflicts, and humanitarian crises. #IBODM #disastermedicine
