I attended many trainings and breakout sessions, from AI to community communication. I also participated in the IAEM-USA Region 9 meeting to network and meet new people. Thrilled and honored to have presented at the recent International Association of Emergency Managers annual conference. What an incredible week of professional development, information sharing and collaboration with the best of the best in the EM profession. Thanks again to each of the IAEM Conference Committee members, including Julie Husk, for giving our K-12 panel a platform. The continued support of the IAEM K-12 Caucus by Chelsea Steadman, MS, QAS, Allison Farole, MPA, CEM, MiPEM and many others within IAEM leadership made all of this possible. Special thanks also to my conference breakout session counterparts Andre' Briggs, CEM?, MBA D. Scott Hudson, CEM?, TEM? Andrew J. Cox, CEM? and moderator Josh Carmouche, MS, CEM?, CPP? for making the workshop a one-of-a-kind opportunity to advocate for critical connectivity between K-12 emergency management and local city/county EM officials. Having a full session with attendees lining the back of the room only speaks to the interest in this important subject. Reconnecting with several of my IMT colleagues was an added bonus. I certainly miss the teamwork and successes in complex problem-solving, but I don’t miss the weeks and months in command trailers, base camps and hotels. I thoroughly enjoyed another excellent International Association of Emergency Managers Conference this week in Colorado Springs. It kicked off with me speaking in a panel discussion about bridging the gap between schools and local emergency managers with my colleagues Josh Carmouche, MS, CEM?, CPP?, Andre' Briggs, CEM?, MBA, D. Scott Hudson, CEM?, TEM?, and Jon Bodie, CEM? TEM?. The rest of the week was filled with seeing old friends, meeting new ones, learning, and walking the stage to receive my Certified Emergency Manager certificate. #iaem24 #cem

#IAEM2024 Themes #3 and #4: Personal Growth and Service to Others. I took several opportunities last week to quietly observe the room(s). I saw everything from meet-and-greet introductions to long-time colleagues and friends seeing each other again. We had EMs from all over the world (20 countries!) representing their communities and organizations, and I witnessed them engaging in conversations about recent events, sharing their lessons learned – seemingly minimizing the geographic distance between them. There were conversations that crossed generational divides, bridged cultures, and incorporated all types of EMs (public, private, non-profit, higher ed, uniformed services, etc.). And, I saw people step out of their comfort zone, get on a stage, and speak in front of a large audience. As I observed, I couldn’t help but relish in the Personal Growth that I was witnessing. And then there was Service to Others. You know, it’s funny, I’m not sure people realize how much the IAEM conference is planned and executed by volunteers. Definitely not all of it, but a lot of it. Everything from speaker selection and identification to session moderating. Regional, committee, and caucus event planning and hosting. Presenting as keynotes, plenaries, EMVision Talks, poster showcases, and breakout sessions. Working the scholarship auction and being a conference Ambassador. These activities are consistently implemented in a partnership between members and IAEM staff. But as I sat back and observed ALL that was IAEM2024, I couldn’t help but admire my colleagues as they continued their Service to Others. Not only do they work in EM, dedicating their lives in service to others, but they continued to do so at IAEM2024 so that everyone could have the BEST conference experience. It's a team effort. #iaem24 was a great success. A beautiful location - The Broadmoor, in Colorado Springs, was the new location this year. Looking forward to go back! Working with a great group all-year round to bring some great networking activities and sessions, planning an all-around great experience for the 2,500 attendees. Achieving the opportunity to speak at the conference for the first time, about a topic that was also a first at the conference, with an attendance of about 150 #EmergencyManagers. Being there for friends who received their #AEM / #CEM credentials, and as the Sonoma DEM team was recognized for the Model EOC program was a truly proud moment. Seeing familiar faces and meeting new people from across the country and from different nations is a very rewarding added benefit.
