Safety is aviation's top priority. IATA's Annual Safety Report reveals continuous long-term improvement, although 2024 was a step back from exceptional performance in 2023. The all-accident rate of 1.13 per million flights was better than the five-year average of 1.25 but worse than the 1.09 recorded in 2023. Tail strikes and runway excursions were the most frequently reported incidents in 2024, underscoring the importance of take-off and landing safety measures. “Even with recent high profile aviation accidents, it is important to remember that accidents are extremely rare. A decade ago, the five-year average (2011-2015) was one accident for every 456,000 flights. Today, the five-year average (2020-2024) is one accident for every 810,000 flights. That improvement is because we know that every fatality is one too many. We honor the memory of every life lost in an aviation accident with our deepest sympathies and ever greater resolve to make flying even safer.” said Willie Walsh, IATA’s Director General. Ground handling plays a vital role in keeping our world safely connected. The IATA Safety Audit for Ground Operations (ISAGO) is an industry program for the global oversight of ground handling service providers (GHSPs). And there's good news: the community of airlines, GHSPs, regulators, and airports that endorse ISAGO and support global standardization is growing. Globally, there are now 400 ISAGO Station accreditations and 169 #airline members who all see significant benefits. Europe remains one of the busiest regions for air travel, with close 600 million international visitors in 2024. While popular destinations such as Spain, United Kingdom and Italy welcomed the most visitors, Eastern and Central Europe have seen a significant surge in international travelers. Topping the list of the fastest-growing international travel numbers is Albania, followed by Czechia and Azerbaijan. Broad consensus on 3 priorities came out of last week's IATA World Data Symposium: 1.??????To use data even more intensely to derive value 2.??????To innovate by integrating technology solutions 3.??????To build cyber resilience “The inaugural #IATAWDS reinforced the critical role of data, technology, and cybersecurity in shaping the future of #aviation. It also clearly demonstrated that by working together across the aviation value chain to share information and modernize #standards, we create enormous potential to benefit our customers with even more efficient travel and shipping experiences” said Kim Macaulay, IATA’s Chief Information and Data Officer. Reflecting the focus areas of #IATAWDS, IATA unveiled the results of 3 proof-of-concept (PoC) programs worked on with companies that are part of IATA’s Strategic Partnership Program. Did you know that international catering waste (ICW) is often classified as biohazardous, requiring incineration, sterilization, or deep landfill burial? A number of countries have introduced legislation on handling and disposing of catering waste from international flights to protect their agricultural sectors, particularly concerning animal health. While these regulations are designed to prevent the spread of animal diseases, they also prevent airlines from segregating, recovering, and recycling waste. The specialized handling and disposal requirements imposed by these legislations and the resulting inspection charges place a significant financial burden on the sector. Given the sector's robust food hygiene controls that ensure airline meals are safe for human consumption, this biohazardous classification seems disproportionate.
