Safety is aviation's top priority. IATA's Annual Safety Report reveals continuous long-term improvement, although 2024 was a step back from exceptional performance in 2023. The all-accident rate of 1.13 per million flights was better than the five-year average of 1.25 but worse than the 1.09 recorded in 2023. Tail strikes and runway excursions were the most frequently reported incidents in 2024, underscoring the importance of take-off and landing safety measures. “Even with recent high profile aviation accidents, it is important to remember that accidents are extremely rare. A decade ago, the five-year average (2011-2015) was one accident for every 456,000 flights. Today, the five-year average (2020-2024) is one accident for every 810,000 flights. That improvement is because we know that every fatality is one too many. We honor the memory of every life lost in an aviation accident with our deepest sympathies and ever greater resolve to make flying even safer.” said Willie Walsh, IATA’s Director General. Aviation is a critical driver of economic growth and social connectivity in Canada. ? We support the National Airlines Council of Canada | Conseil national des lignes aériennes du Canada call to reduce federal fees, taxes and charges in air travel; reinvest airport Crown rent back into airport infrastructure; modernize regulations, and incentivize SAF production. It's imperative that all political parties address the affordability and sustainability of air travel in Canada.
NACC calls on political parties to prioritize affordable and sustainable air travel during the upcoming federal election. In a country as vast as Canada, air travel is a not a luxury – it is a crucial mode of transport for people and goods.?Canadians expect an air travel system that is affordable, sustainable, and modern.?The federal government has the power to make this a reality. https://lnkd.in/gwMFppfJ

Interregional air passenger traffic increased by 45% over the past decade, accounting for 16.5% of total traffic in 2024. Growth is enabled by a combination of increasing the available seat capacity on existing routes and the number of unique routes flown. Interregional seat capacity has grown by 44% since 2014, while unique routes have risen by 30%. This trend is reflected across the four busiest route areas: Europe-North America, Latin America-North America, Asia Pacific-Middle East, and Europe-Middle East. How will airlines allocate capacity going forward? Influences will include new-generation aircraft, e.g., narrowbody aircraft with a longer operating range that can open “thinner” markets, on the one hand, and intensifying capacity constraints at major airports, on the other hand. IATA comment with respect to Heathrow closing on 21 March 2025 ?? “Today’s closing of Heathrow will inconvenience a huge number of travelers. We thank those affected for their patience as airlines focus on getting them to their destination as quickly and efficiently as possible. This is yet another case of Heathrow letting down both travelers and airlines. And that begs some serious questions. Firstly, how is it that critical infrastructure—of national and global importance—is totally dependent on a single power source without an alternative. If that is the case—as it seems—then it is a clear planning failure by the airport. And, from that arises the question of who bears the costs of taking care of disrupted travelers. We must find a fairer allocation of passenger care costs than airlines alone picking up the tab when infrastructure fails. Until that happens, Heathrow has very little incentive to improve,” said Willie Walsh, IATA’s Director General. https://bit.ly/4ho7YO8

Significant milestone for Cathay Cargo Terminal showcasing the importance of robust #security measures and collaborative efforts in enhancing global #aviation security.
Cathay Cargo Terminal has become the first cargo terminal in Asia to successfully achieve IATA Security Management System (SeMS) certification, attaining Operating status – the highest possible tier for a first-time SeMS certification. IATA SeMS provides a structured framework for proactively managing regulatory compliance, security risks, threats, and vulnerabilities. Cathay Cargo Terminal Chief Operating Officer Mark Watts said: “Security is foundational for any airport cargo terminal, and we are proud to be recognised by IATA for our strong commitment to all areas of security.” IATA Senior Vice President, Operations, Safety and Security Nick Careen said: “Achieving IATA's Security Management System (SeMS) Certification (Operating Status) is a testament to Cathay Cargo Terminal’s dedication to proactive and risk-based security management. By embedding SeMS principles into its operations, Cathay Cargo Terminal reinforces and strengthens its overall security framework and also contributes to the broader goal of modernising aviation security through proactive continuous improvement and industry-wide collaboration.” See more at: https://lnkd.in/g7SU5EUa #CathayCargoTerminal #IATA #SecurityManagementSystem #SeMS #AirportSecurity #OperationalLeadership #SafetyLeadership #HongKongInternationalAirport #HKIA #AirportAuthorityHongKong #WorldsBestCargoTerminal

GNSS interference is posing a growing risk to aviation safety. Data from the IATA Incident Data Exchange (IDX) highlights a sharp increase in GNSS-related interference, which can mislead aircraft navigation systems. While there are several back-up systems in place to support aviation safety even when these systems are affected, these incidents still pose deliberate and unacceptable risks to civil aviation.

Aviation Security Leaders call for the rapid adoption of digital identity technologies to enhance aviation #security and operational efficiency. Leading government and industry stakeholders in #aviation security participating in the Sydney Leaders Week Conference supported this position, emphasizing the need for collaboration in implementing Verifiable Credentials and Decentralized Identifiers. #Digitalidentity can bring the following benefits to aviation security: ? Stronger Document Integrity ? Global Trust ? Operational Efficiency "The technology is ready and proven. We now need to take the momentum of this meeting and work towards obtaining a recommendation at the upcoming ICAO assembly later this year,” said @Nick Careen, IATA’s Senior Vice President, Operations, Safety and Security. Aviation is a key pillar of Morocco's economy. In 2023, aviation (including aviation-related tourism) supported 856,000 jobs and contributed 7.9% ($11.2 billion) to the Moroccan economy. We welcome the Kingdom of Morocco's 'Airports 2030 Strategy' aimed at modernizing airport infrastructure, enhancing the passenger experience, and further strengthening the country’s position as a major global and regional aviation hub. To gain the maximum from investments in airport infrastructure, IATA proposed three priorities for the Kingdom: ?? Cost-Efficiency: Fair and competitive charges, taxes and fees are essential to foster connectivity as #Morocco upgrades its airport infrastructure. ?? Capacity-Building: Investments in infrastructure must be coupled with investments in human resources. ?? Consumer Regulation: Smart regulation is essential for aviation to thrive. Ineffective consumer legislation from Europe and the United States should not be imported.
