We are so grateful to have attended today's Akron Roundtable! Tonya M. Matthews, Ph.D., President and CEO of the International African American Museum, presented on how this incredible museum came to be.
The International African American Museum is about a journey that began centuries ago in Africa, and still continues. It is about the journey of millions of Africans, captured and forced across the Atlantic in the grueling and inhumane Middle Passage, who arrived at Gadsden’s Wharf in Charleston, South Carolina, and other ports in the Atlantic World. Their labor, resistance, and ingenuity, and that of their descendants shaped every aspect of our world.

Last night, Chef WiBi Ashley of Art and Remedies Wellness, gave us more than just food to eat, she gave us food for thought at our IAAM program "Rooted in Health: A Journey Through Ancestral Eating and Plant-Based Traditions in Charleston." Her masterful explanation of how plant-based eating traditions in West and West Central Africa gave way to meat-based eating traditions among the descendants of enslaved Africans in the American South, not only challenged us to think differently about the roots of soul food, but also challenged us to remember how vibrant our ancestral eating traditions were. We were inspired to return to our roots, both metaphorically and literally, and embrace a holistic lifestyle that honors our past through what we eat.
