We open a world of knowledge and career opportunities to students in Middle Tennessee and beyond.

关于我们

The M.A. in International Affairs opens doors to career opportunities in an interconnected world — not only abroad but also right here in Middle Tennessee. Our graduates enjoy professional positions in the U.S. government and military, in business and industry, in higher education, and in the nonprofit sector, and they live in far-flung cities like London, Geneva, and Riyadh, as well as in our own backyard, in places like Huntsville, Clarksville, and Nashville. MTSU's M.A. in International Affairs is the only degree program of its kind in Tennessee. Students in this interdisciplinary program develop applicable skills as well as in-depth knowledge of the theory and practice of international affairs.

  • We are proud of our graduate students, faculty and staff, and our wonderful academic community in the International Affairs M.A. program at MTSU! We are currently accepting applications for admission in Fall 2025. Motivated students are encouraged to apply by March 15. Applications after that date will also be considered. The GRE is not required, and the program is flexible. The MAIA Graduate Program Director, Dr. Jon DiCicco, is happy to reply to inquiries about the M.A. program and to advise prospective students on specialized study, pathways to degree completion, and exploring IR-adjacent subjects, as well as online options for meeting some degree requirements. We welcome veterans, active-duty military (such as Green-to-Gold), Tennessee government employees, and members of the community who seek to expand their knowledge and skills. Tennessee residents pay in-state tuition rates and applicants from some nearby states in the Southeast may be eligible for in-state tuition through the Southern Regional Education Board's Academic Common Market. A graduate education at Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) is a great value, and our graduates have gained meaningful employment with the state, the federal government, prominent local and national nonprofits, international organizations, local government, higher education, and more. If you are interested in security, development, human rights, regional studies, or just international affairs in general, check out our program and consider joining our academic community! ?? #internationalaffairs #internationalrelations #internationalsecurity #internationaldevelopment #internationalorganization #highereducation #mastersprogram Hat tip to MTSU Political and Global Affairs for promoting our program! ??

  • January is Human Trafficking Prevention Month. In our MA program, several professors and grad students focus their efforts on human trafficking. For example, Drs. James Chaney and John Maynor teach courses on the subject; December graduate Natalie Phillips just completed a practicum in which she worked hands-on with an organization that supports women who've been trafficked; and first-year student Emily Bigler has done extensive work with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Blue Campaign, a national public awareness campaign designed to educate the public, law enforcement, and industry partners to recognize the signs of human trafficking (https://lnkd.in/g-GyW6Q). Although no one person can solve this complex problem, we are encouraged by the members of our intellectual community who are doing more than their fair share, and we love to see government activity that aligns with this mission, too. ??

January is Human Trafficking Prevention Month and this year marks the 25th anniversary of the Trafficking Victims Protection Act. This legislation has been a cornerstone of our fight against human trafficking, guiding efforts to prosecute traffickers, protect victims, and prevent the crime. Our Trafficking in Persons Report provides an in-depth look each year into the United States' ongoing efforts to combat human trafficking and support survivors. • Students in our M.A. in International Affairs program build skills and confidence that equip them to participate intelligently in the public square. Recent graduate Samuel Waitt puts his skills and confidence on display in his analysis of Donald Trump's electoral victory in November. It's not every day that one of our graduates publishes an opinion piece in a leading newspaper like The Tennessean, and we love to see it! ?? Nice going, Sam. We look forward to seeing more of your published work in the months and years to come.

  • Great news from one of our MA in International Affairs students to start this new year: Matthew Siciliano will serve as Staff Assistant in the House of Representatives. Way to go, Matthew. We love to see it! ??

  • This paid research assistant position could be a great fit for one of our M.A. in International Affairs students. The job requires a background in international security, an appreciation of scientific method, and an openness to researching emerging technologies. Programming capability is a plus. Current students or recent grads who wish to apply should move swiftly and let MAIA program director Dr. Jon DiCicco of their intentions. Note that this is a full-time, on-site position.

  • We are deeply grateful for Dr. Rachel Harmon's continuing service to our home department. Before studying for her doctorate at Emory University, Dr. Harmon earned an M.A. in International Affairs from MTSU. She has remained a dedicated supporter of our academic programs, including her volunteer work as a Virtual Mentor. Dr. Harmon's wise counsel is incredibly valuable to our students, especially those who aspire to earning a Ph.D. We celebrate Dr. Harmon's achievements as an alumna of the MAIA program, thank her for her service, and eagerly anticipate news of accomplishments yet to come! ??

In late October 2024, PGA's Dr. Christabel Devadoss published an article in The Conversation about the "Rust Belt," the 2024 Presidential Election, and impacts on the region containing the nation's fastest-growing minority populations. The Rust Belt refers to Midwestern states (like Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania) whose economies were decimated by the decline of those industries in the 1970s. The region contains some of the nation’s fastest-growing minority populations – in particular Latino, Arab and Asian communities. Dr. Devadoss, geographer who studies the experiences of communities of color in the rural Rust Belt, interviewed 35 people in the region who identified as people of color. These interviews reflected local and rural issues, nuanced identities and populations, differing political ideologies, and commonalities with typical rural Rust Belt struggles such as limited internet access, few or no grocery stores, declining roads and other infrastructure-related challenges. Dr. Devadoss connected these interviews to the 2024 Presidential Election and campaigning in these key battleground states in her article. You can read more: https://lnkd.in/dyWcQdTa Disclaimer: Opinions expressed by the author are not necessarily the views of the department or university. PS - Dr. Devadoss takes amazing photos. You can see some of her work here @christabeldevadossphoto. She is teaching a Multimedia Methods & Creative Research Skills course in Spring 2025.
