International Academy of Trial Lawyers

Many thanks to Professor David Law University of Virginia Law for organizing an all star panel for the International Academy of Trial Lawyers in Taipei, including: Syaru Shirley Lin of the Center for Asia-Pacific Resilience and Innovation (CAPRI) and a Nonresident Senior Fellow at The Brookings Institution; George Yin from National Taiwan University; Yen-Tu Su of the Institutum Iurisprudentiae, Academia Sinica; and Yu-Jie Chen from the Institute of Law of Taiwan’s Academia Sinica and an Affiliated Scholar at the U.S.-Asia Law Institute of New York University School of Law.

What an honor to meet with Taiwan’s Vice President Hsaio Bi-Kihm with a delegation from the International Academy of Trial Lawyers. Vice President Hsaio is truly a force for democracy and the Rule of Law.

The Academy was honored to meet with Taiwan’s Vice President Hsaio Bi-Kihm yesterday at the Presidential Office in Taipei. Many thanks to the Vice President, Deputy Foreign Minister Tien, Deputy Foreign Minister Hsu, Vice Consul Sun, Mr. Alfred Fang and Mei-Nu Yu, Chair of the Taiwanese Bar Association.

Karen Burgess, this year’s president of the International Academy of Trial Lawyers, has put together an epic trip to Japan this year. Tonight was a very special dinner at the Heian Shrine in Kyoto, and as long as I’ve admired Charla Aldous and Randy Johnston, this is the first time I’ve seen either of them in a kimono.

Thank you to Deputy Chief of Mission to Japan Katherine (Kemy) Monahan for addressing the International Academy of Trial Lawyers in Tokyo last night, and to Fellow Don Howarth for introducing Hisaya Kimura to the Academy as its first Global Colleague.

Congratulations to Academy Fellow Kalpana Srinivasan on this well-deserved award.

Congratulations to Tom Edwards, State, Province, and Country Chairs Committee Chair for the International Academy of Trial Lawyers. The Florida Justice Association awarded him the Perry Nichols Award, its highest honor for an individual who has dedicated a lifetime to the pursuit of justice.

What an honor to facilitate Voice of the Plaintiff and Defense Bars on behalf of the International Academy of Trial Lawyers at National ABOTA’s Summit on the Effects of AI on the Civil Trial Bar in DC last week. It was great to work with Elise Sanguinetti, Brent Arnold, Sean Griffin and Corban Rhodes. Special thanks to ABOTA President La'Verne Edney and President-Elect Jennifer Doan.
