As caregivers, we spend so much time caring for patients that it’s easy to forget we can be patients, too.?Whether we work for a health system or not, patients from all walks of life deserve quality and equitable care. Ambyr Spencer, clinical operations manager at Primary Children’s Hospital Miller Lehi Campus in Lehi, Utah, found herself in this situation in 2021. Her experience with Intermountain’s cardiology team, specifically Dr. Alberto Brizolara, reinforced the values we promote in clinical excellence and doing the right thing. Discover their inspiring story of friendship and exceptional cardiology care in the article below. Every year, 45,000 people die by suicide in the U.S., according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. That’s one death every 11 minutes. The six states that Intermountain Health serves are part of what is known as the “Suicide Belt,” a term coined by University of Nevada, Las Vegas, sociologist Matt Wray in the early 2000s, where deaths by suicide are higher than in most parts of the country. Suicide is a serious healthcare issue that affects individuals of all ages and backgrounds. Together, we can break the stigma surrounding mental health and create a safe space for conversations about prevention. Intermountain is dedicated to making a difference in our communities, helping prevent deaths by suicide. - We have distributed 66,892 firearm locks, helping to prevent impulsive acts. - We have over 30,000 caregivers trained in suicide prevention techniques. - And we have freely made our training accessible to other first responders, teachers, and librarians, empowering over 57,781 individuals with the tools to intervene and support those in crisis. - We have reached over 18,000 children with educational materials on emotional well-being and coping mechanisms. - In partnership with The Defensive Line, we are creating open dialogue for people with many different backgrounds to discuss the importance of mental health, as we did during our February event, when seven professional athletes opened up about their struggle with mental health. This September, during National Suicide Prevention Month, I encourage everyone to prioritize mental health, have open dialogue about mental and behavioral health to your children, friends, and family, seek support when needed, and continue to raise awareness. I’m grateful for the partnerships Intermountain has that help us promote mental health nationally, such as Rob Allen’s participation in the CEOs Against Gun Violence and our partnership with the Ad Council. Working together, we are bringing greater awareness, support, and better health to our communities. And if you or someone you know is struggling with suicidal thoughts, please reach out to the Suicide Prevention Hotline, by dialing 988, to talk with someone.

The six states and 600,000 miles of the Intermountain West that Intermountain Health serves are part of what is known as the “Suicide Belt,” a term coined by University of Nevada, Las Vegas, sociologist Matt Wray in the early 2000s. He found that the suicide rate in that region was higher than the rest of the country due to several social reasons. ? Intermountain is committed to raising awareness about mental health and providing support to people struggling with mental and behavioral health. Over the past year, we have trained more than 57,000 first responders, caregivers, teachers, and librarians on Counseling for Lethal Arms (CALM), teaching them to use behavioral health tools to have discussion with an individual struggling with suicide ideation. ? We all want to keep our family, loved ones, and neighbors safe in a moment of suicidal crises. This September, during National Suicide Prevention Month, let’s prioritize mental health. Have open conversations, seek support when needed, and continue to raise awareness.

At Intermountain Health, acts of service are the epitome of our value: We serve with empathy. Several members of our Talent Acquisition team recently volunteered their time and expertise at Wasatch Community Gardens, a non-profit organization located in Salt Lake City, Utah that empowers people to grow and eat healthy, organic, local food. During their time at Wasatch Community Gardens, Intermountain caregivers helped dig holes to build a greenhouse and shared information with community members about Intermountain, our career opportunities, and resume and interviewing best practices. Thank you for embodying our Intermountain values, Jesse Holden, SHRM-CP, Michael Lowry, MBA, Josh Thiel, Adrienne Sundeen, Melissa Trinnaman, Caitlin Kopecky, Stacie Selimovic, PHR, Kamille Woodward, Alicia Riley, John Guymon, and Adam Crew! #WeServeWithEmpathy #TogetherForTheHealthiestLives

CW: Suicide, firearms Research has shown that in a mental health crisis, thoughts of suicide can turn to action incredibly quickly—often under 10 minutes. And 90% of people who survive a suicide attempt, don’t go on to die by suicide later. To help prevent a permanent outcome in a temporary crisis, experts suggest making it harder to access lethal means—largely firearms and medications. Here are a few barriers you can try to make it harder to quickly access lethal means in a crisis: Only keep smaller supplies of medications in the house—perhaps a week’s worth at a time. Keep medications locked away from others in the house. Keep firearms locked away. If you are the one experiencing a mental health crisis, you can give the safe or trigger lock keys to a trusted friend. You can also ask someone else to hold your firearms for you until you are more stable. Lock firearms and ammunition separately, or don’t keep ammunition at home. You can request a free gun lock from Intermountain Health at https://lnkd.in/gA_mPk_V If you or someone you know is struggling or in crisis, help is available.?Call?or?text?988 to reach the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.
