Industry leaders point to five standout business models that have proven successful: 1?? ??2?? ???????????? ????????????????: Operators collaborate directly with local governments or transport authorities to run shared ?? bike or ?? scooter schemes, benefiting from long-term contracts that offer revenue security. 2?? ??2?? ?????????????????? ????????????????: Companies provide bike leasing schemes for employees, often subsidised by governments, reducing risk for operators and promoting sustainability. 3?? ??2?? ?????????????? ????????????????????????: Subscription services for cars, mopeds, bikes, or scooters offer flexible, long-term contracts, balancing demand and ownership. 4?? ?????? ??????????????: Catering to short-term car needs, operators in this space bridge renters and vehicle owners, with businesses increasingly adopting this model to manage fleets and maximize utilisation. 5?? ?????????? ??????????????: Platforms that enable individuals and businesses to rent out private parking spaces, leveraging acquisitions and expanded services to grow profitability and user bases. To show the importance of safe, affordable, and accessible transport, the ?? UN General Assembly declared 26 November 'World Sustainable Transport Day'. ?? As we celebrate this day for the second time, let’s make sure that we put public transport at the heart of this global day! ?????? António Guterres, United Nations Secretary-General: “The road to a better future depends on cleaner and greener transportation systems. We can steer our societies towards a cleaner and more sustainable path for people and planet.” ???? ?? Over half of the world’s population doesn’t have access to adequate sustainable transport systems. Even though, according to the UN, a car-free life can reduce a person’s annual carbon footprint by up to 3.6 tons. ???? ??♂??? Here is how: ???????????? ???? ???? ??????????????????: The U.S. leads in tech development, China in industrialization —but #Europe can become a multi-facetted incubator for sector- or application-specific AD solutions. A good mix of blue chips and hidden champions across many industries as well as multiple economically strong cities create an attractive B2B / B2G demand side. Europeans could just be a bit more visionary and might learn here from the Middle East, as Clemens Rengier highlighted in his talk. ?????????????????????????? ???????????? ??????????: Global scale matters to build a profitable AD stack as Chris Lichtmannecker and Maurice Claessens, Ph.D confirmed, but there’s a world of opportunities in specialized niches beyond the core technology. EU startups like driveblocks (automation of heavy duty vehicles), DROMOS GmbH (ultra-light shuttles), useblocks GmbH (code documentation) or Holo (fleet deployment) are showing how players along the value chain can carve out profitable roles. ????????-???????????? ??????????????????????????: Open-source initiatives allow to benefit from scale even when operating in a sub-scale segment. Universities are key here, and Technical University of Munich’s advancements with the Autoware Foundation originated in Japan presented by Prof. Markus Lienkamp sound promising (yet still early stage). Europe should push this even stronger. ???????????????????? ???????? ????????????????: Recent AI breakthroughs allow for alternative technological pathways towards Level 4. UK-startup Wayve’s end-to-end approach —building one foundational model across all AD layers — is a compelling story. Their success in raising $1bn and expanding to the U.S. shows strong investor confidence in this paradigm shift. Is this an opportunity also for other EU startups? ???????????????? ???????????????? ????????????????: Europe must focus investments on regional clusters to scale pilot projects into significant fleets. Deploying 300–1,000 vehicles in priority areas could demonstrate tech & commercial viability, paving the way for broader adoption. Ambitions like Hamburg’s 10k or Oslo’s 30k AD shuttles by 2030 are the exception, and still need to bridge significant gaps from today’s small pilots. ?????????????????????????????? ???????????????????? ????????????: The absence of OEMs or Tier 1 suppliers on the panels was striking.
