At their recent meeting, G-24 Ministers urged for key reforms to strengthen the global financial architecture, aiming to boost the capacity of the IMF and World Bank in supporting nations through turbulent times. In the?communique?issued at the end of the meeting, they emphasized several priorities:? ???Creating market-based solutions for countries facing temporary liquidity issues? ???Mobilizing finance for climate and development goals at accessible costs? ???Enhancing the sovereign debt resolution framework? ???Advancing international tax reform to fund recovery, climate action, and the SDGs? ???Modernizing the global trading system to counter protectionism and support inclusive growth. Amidst global geopolitical fragmentation and slow growth, the Annual Meetings of G-24 Ministers and Governors created an opportunity to renew the?commitments of countries to multilateralism as envisioned when the Bretton Woods system was created 80 years ago. At G-24 plenary sessions attended by the G-24 members, institutional observers, and the leadership of the IMF and World Bank Group, the key message was the need to further support countries that have difficulties navigating the difficult economic environment, while at the same time reinvigorating the Bretton Woods Institutions.

The?United?States?dollar?has been the dominant international currency for over 70 years. However, a?significant?discussion?in?de-dollarization?is?gaining?momentum, and the?declining?share?of the?United?States?dollar?global?transactions?indicates this?shift.?The seminar aims to review the?dollar?dominance and?de-dollarization?trends and the prospects of the emergence of distributed ledger technology (DLT) based wholesale Central Bank Digital Currencies (wCBDC) as credible alternatives. The 80th anniversary of the Bretton Woods System provides an excellent opportunity for policymakers to address the current system's challenges and explore ways to strengthen multilateralism. To mark the occasion, the G-24 will host a virtual seminar titled "Multilateralism in A Changing World" on July 1st, 2024. The objective is to encourage meaningful participation and productive discussions among policymakers, experts, and scholars regarding the significant challenges and opportunities ahead. At the conference on “Addressing the Debt Crisis in the Global South”, jointly organized by the Initiative for Policy Dialogue, Columbia University and the Pontifical Academy of Sciences, G-24 Director, Iyabo Masha presented the position of the Group on sovereign debt crisis. The G-24 supports Pope Francis’ appeal for an international financial reform to provide effective debt relief to vulnerable countries. We consider comprehensive and tailored debt reduction initiatives crucial, considering the unique economic vulnerabilities and debt profiles of each nation.
