Women's representation in #parliaments worldwide has climbed from 11.3% in 1995 to 2??7??.2??% in 2025. But in recent years, progress has slowed down and, in some parliaments, the number of #WomenMPs has gone backwards. It has been thirty years since the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action was agreed, envisaging a world where women had equal access to and full participation in power structures and decision-making. Where do we stand today? Read #IPU's Women in parliament 1995-2025 report. ??ipu.org/WIP30yrs

关于我们
The IPU is the global organization of national parliaments. It was founded in 1889 as the first multilateral political organization in the world, encouraging cooperation and dialogue between all nations. Today, the IPU comprises 181 national Member Parliaments. It promotes democracy and helps parliaments become stronger, younger, gender-balanced and more diverse. It also defends the human rights of parliamentarians through a dedicated committee made up of MPs from around the world. Twice a year, the IPU convenes over 1,500 parliamentary delegates and partners in a world assembly, bringing a parliamentary dimension to global governance, including the work of the United Nations and the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Reflections on "Transforming Norms: Advancing Women's Leadership" at #CSW69 On March 10, 2025, we gathered at the ECOSOC Chamber, UN Headquarters in New York for a powerful discussion on breaking down the structural, socioeconomic, and cultural barriers that continue to limit women’s political leadership. The WYDE Women’s Leadership side event implemented by UN Women, International IDEA, the Inter-Parliamentary Union, with support from the European Union, brought together parliamentarians, local leaders, women’s movements, civil society organizations, youth representatives, and experts to tackle the urgent need for transforming social norms and ensuring inclusive, intersectional feminist leadership. ?? Key Takeaways: ? The need for systemic change to dismantle discriminatory social norms in politics ? Inspiring best practices and strategies from across the globe ? A renewed commitment to advancing women’s full and effective participation in decision-making spaces As we reflect on Beijing+30, this conversation is more important than ever. While progress has been made, the numbers remind us that there is still much work to do: only 87 countries have ever had a woman leader, and women hold just 23.3% of cabinet positions and 27% of national legislature seats globally. Let’s keep the momentum going! It’s time to challenge norms, amplify women’s voices, and push for real structural transformation. A huge thank you to our incredible speakers, panelists, and attendees for making this discussion so impactful. Let’s continue working together for a future where women’s leadership is the norm, not the exception. #WYDEWomenLeadership #Beijing30 #WomenInPolitics #GenderEquality #FeministLeaders

What can parliamentarians do to make young people believe they are being listened to and taken seriously? How can #MPs make the political arena less imposing and more collaborative to encourage #youth, especially young women, to participate in politics? Speaker of #Australia's House of Representatives, Milton Dick MP will host an #IPU webinar to consider ways of improving youth's opinion of #democracy and how young people can hold their leaders to account. Last week, I had the pleasure of returning to my alma mater, the Geneva Graduate Institute, to speak about the Inter-Parliamentary Union at its IO Career Fair. Seeing how much interest there was in parliamentary diplomacy was very energizing! As representatives of the people, legislators, guardians of public funds, and overseers of governmental action, parliamentarians shape the policies that define the degree to which international commitments have a real, tangible impact on societies. At the IPU, we’re here to support them every step of the way. For those who share this passion and want to be part of our mission, please check out the vacancies on our website: ?https://lnkd.in/e4Q22iNF

As we mark International Women’s Day 2025 #IWD and the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, Equality Now, the The Global Campaign for Equal Nationality Rights, the Inter-Parliamentary Union, the UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency and UN Women are calling for expedited action to end gender discrimination in nationality laws and recommit to efforts to achieve gender-equal nationality rights around the globe. We stand in solidarity with the many impacted mothers, children and their families, who are calling for reforms without delay. Those impacted are experiencing wide-ranging harms and human rights violations, including obstacles to accessing education, healthcare, employment, inheritance, property rights, freedom of movement and family unity. Gender-discriminatory nationality laws are a leading cause of statelessness and also contribute to gender-based violence, including child marriage and human trafficking. In December 2024, we were heartened to hear champions from governments, parliaments and civil society from fifteen countries, at the Global Multistakeholder Summit on Advancing Gender Equality in Nationality Laws, commit to mobilize action where reform is still needed. It is time for all nationality laws to uphold women’s status as equal citizens by ensuring gender-equal nationality rights. Read our full statement: https://lnkd.in/ehP9-JAi

As we mark #IWD2025 and the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration, the #IPU, together with the The Global Campaign for Equal Nationality Rights, Equality Now, UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency and UN Women, calls for gender-equal #nationality rights across the globe. Today, forty countries still deny women the equal right to confer nationality on children or spouses or to acquire, change, or retain their nationality. There are also twenty-four countries where women lack the right to confer nationality on their children on an equal basis with men. While there has been some progress, with 75% of countries today upholding gender-equal nationality laws, more needs to be done. The IPU stands in solidarity with the many impacted mothers, children, and their families who are calling for reform without delay. #genderparity Read the joint statement: ipu.org/BD30

Women hold just 16% of roles in #peace processes. Women are also excluded from high-level economic positions, with only 28% of managers and 2% of venture capital funding allocated to women. This #IWD2025, the #IPU reiterates the United Nations Human Rights CEDAW General Recommendation No. 40 on the Equal and Inclusive Representation of Women in Decision-Making Systems, which is an established global roadmap to achieve fifty-fifty #genderparity in decision-making systems and calls on all Member #parliaments to work towards these goals. Further data on #WomenMPs can be found in #IPU's latest publication, Women in parliament 1995-2025. ipu.org/WIP30yrs
