The Inter-American Dialogue is the preeminent think-tank dedicated to Western Hemisphere affairs.

关于我们

The Dialogue is a hemispheric organization that builds networks of cooperation and action to advance democratic resilience, shared prosperity, social inclusion, and sustainable development across the Americas. We impact policy debates, devise solutions, and enhance collaboration to unlock meaningful change in the Western Hemisphere. Dialogue activities are directed to generating new policy ideas and practical proposals for action, and getting these ideas and proposals to government and private decision makers. The Dialogue also offers diverse Latin American and Caribbean voices access to U.S. policy debates and discussions. Based in Washington, the Dialogue conducts its work throughout the hemisphere. A majority of our Board of Directors are from Latin American and Caribbean nations, as are more than half of the Dialogue's members and participants in our other leadership networks and task forces. Since 1982—through successive Republican and Democratic administrations and many changes of leadership elsewhere in the hemisphere—the Dialogue has helped shape the agenda of issues and choices in inter-American relations.

Program Director Inter-American Dialogue / Former Executive Director Latin America Energy Organization / Co-Founder Ivy / Energy and Sustainability

My latest contribution to Latin America Energy Advisor explores the resurgence of nuclear energy and its potential for development in El Salvador. Key points from my commentary: ? Nuclear energy is making a strong comeback, and demonstration projects for small reactor technologies are essential for positioning countries competing in this field. In this context, El Salvador, within the framework of new alliances and geopolitical reorganization, could emerge as an interesting case for advancing this technology beyond U.S. borders. ?? While nuclear technology may come with a higher price tag compared to other alternatives for expanding the country’s electricity supply, it could create positive externalities by fostering the development of new capabilities within the country. ?? El Salvador boasts a diversified energy mix, with a significant share of renewable energy. However, there is a growing need for reliable power generation to meet increasing demand. A special thank you to Jack Quinn Quin and Gene Kuleta for providing the platform for this discussion. Rebecca Bill Chavez Michael Kerns Elizabeth Belair Mauricio E. Reporter for the Latin America Advisor

I previewed Bolivia's presidential election in a feature article published today in the Latin America Advisor (see screenshot attached). The institutional instability leading up to August's vote closely mirrors that which preceded the 2019 political crisis, former President Eduardo Rodríguez Veltzé told me in an interview last week. A fragmented left opens the door for even more irregularities than 2019, if anything, with Evo Morales' uncertain candidacy casting an added shadow over the race. While the field of candidates is murky today, fraud allegations are flying in every direction, setting the stage for a conservative victory after a close (and sure to be disputed) runoff vote, Kathryn Ledebur told me in a separate interview. "We forget what Bolivian coalition politics were like," Ledebur said. (Bolivia hasn't held a presidential runoff election since 2002.) The candidates "are all in there to see which chunk of the rubble they end up with." Another political quagmire awaits Bolivia in this year's election, with major implications for the balance of trade (and governance) in the region. Inter-American Dialogue

  • Education program manager Sarah Stanton joined the Georgetown Americas Institute for a discussion with Cecilia María Vélez, former Colombian minister of education, to explore the challenges of introducing innovation and reform to education systems across #LatinAmerica. "When we talk about educational reforms and policy-making, the 'what' is simple: fulfilling promises, ensuring clear and transparent communication, and listening to others. The difficult part is the 'how,'' said Stanton. View the full discussion (in Spanish): https://lnkd.in/eNJFMXb3
