Dr. Rebecca Bill Chavez, President & CEO of the Inter-American Dialogue, joined?CNN This Morning with Audie C.?to discuss Secretary of State #MarcoRubio’s trip to the #Caribbean—and why the region deserves more U.S. attention. ?? The Caribbean is often called the “third border,” yet it’s frequently overlooked. This trip is an opportunity to build a?positive, affirmative agenda?that recognizes the region’s importance to U.S. national interests. ?? The #migrationcrisis isn’t just a U.S. southern border issue—it’s a?hemisphere-wide?challenge. ?? #China’s influence in #LatinAmerica and the Caribbean has grown significantly. The U.S. must offer?a compelling alternative—real investments in development, infrastructure, and a reliable partnership. With increasing regional unity, as seen in #CARICOM’s role in electing the first Caribbean Secretary General of the OAS, now is the time for the U.S. to strengthen its engagement in the Caribbean—not just with words, but with action. The Inter-American Dialogue is the preeminent think-tank dedicated to Western Hemisphere affairs.
关于我们
The Dialogue is a hemispheric organization that builds networks of cooperation and action to advance democratic resilience, shared prosperity, social inclusion, and sustainable development across the Americas. We impact policy debates, devise solutions, and enhance collaboration to unlock meaningful change in the Western Hemisphere. Dialogue activities are directed to generating new policy ideas and practical proposals for action, and getting these ideas and proposals to government and private decision makers. The Dialogue also offers diverse Latin American and Caribbean voices access to U.S. policy debates and discussions. Based in Washington, the Dialogue conducts its work throughout the hemisphere. A majority of our Board of Directors are from Latin American and Caribbean nations, as are more than half of the Dialogue's members and participants in our other leadership networks and task forces. Since 1982—through successive Republican and Democratic administrations and many changes of leadership elsewhere in the hemisphere—the Dialogue has helped shape the agenda of issues and choices in inter-American relations.

The U.S. must build a strong, affirmative agenda with the #Caribbean - one rooted in robust engagement and true partnership. Thanks to the Miami Herald for publishing our op-ed - co-authored with Inter-American Dialogue senior fellow Eric Jacobstein. We argue that Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s visit to the region is a vital opportunity to reset U.S.-Caribbean relations. Partnership with the Caribbean is central to U.S. interests—whether on counternarcotics cooperation, the crisis in #Haiti, growing Chinese influence, or energy security. Yet it’s too often overlooked in Washington. It's time to invest in infrastructure and security, expand diplomatic presence, and make 2025 the Year of the Caribbean.
2025 is an opportune year for the U.S. to strengthen engagement with the #Caribbean, with the #SummitoftheAmericas — the tenth gathering of heads of state from the Western Hemisphere — set for December in the #DominicanRepublic. The Trump administration should seize this moment by advancing a robust, positive agenda that enhances U.S. security. Dialogue President and CEO Dr. Rebecca Bill Chavez and Dialogue Senior Fellow Eric Jacobstein write for the Miami Herald. Read more at:?https://lnkd.in/e2YzTZME

It was great to have Inter-American Dialogue senior fellow Antonia Urrejola—former Foreign Minister of #Chile and past President of the #OAS Inter-American Human Rights Commission—join us for a fantastic brown bag session with Dialogue staff! Antonia shared invaluable insights on the region’s democratic future, including: ? The need to strengthen institutions to prove that #democracy delivers. ? The importance of fostering social dialogue to tackle instability and inequality. She also raised key concerns about democratic resilience, particularly: ?? The erosion of judicial and legislative checks on executive power. ?? The weakening influence of international organizations. We wrapped up with a lively discussion on reforming regional institutions, restoring trust in political parties, and strengthening hemispheric cooperation to address transnational challenges. The quality of this conversation was a reminder—not just of Antonia’s brilliance, but also of the incredible expertise within the Inter-American Dialogue team. Looking forward to more of these thoughtful exchanges!
