Intentional Peer Support provides a powerful framework for creating relationships where both people learn and grow together. We offer a range of trainings to examine and practice what is necessary to build mutual support. IPS is used across the world in community, peer support, and human services settings, and is a tool for community development with broad appeal to people from all walks of life. Why IPS? Peers come together around shared experiences and often a desire to change lives. But without a new framework to build upon, people frequently re-enact “help” based on what was done to them. IPS offers a foundation for doing something different. We come from a history of grassroots alternatives that focus on building relationships that are mutual, explorative, and conscious of power.

In memory of Nic Thompson: Nic Thompson from SHARC was a welcome addition to our Intentional Peer Support Australia team! She was warm, clear, supportive and could also be direct when needed. Nic really worked on putting the 3 principles and 4 tasks of Intentional Peer Support into practice. Nic was willing and able to acknowledge, with humour, that it's a perpetual work in progress for us all! Among her many passions and talents, Nic was also a tireless supporter and activist with the LGBTQIA+ community and her HUGE pride flag was displayed in the background during Zoom calls. Nic had an understated ability to oversee the big picture, and also to act as the 'putty' between the wider SHARC organization, the IPS Australia hub and IPS Central. Nic will leave big footprints, and fond memories. Our thoughts are with SHARC and our Australian IPS community right now as they navigate a way forward following the loss of Nic. Today Lisa Archibald the Co-director of Intentional Peer Support based in Scotland and I presented the idea of online peer support groups to the British media, a preventative model of trauma care that would provide safe and confidential spaces for journalists to share how they’ve been impacted by the stories they cover. These peer groups would be comprised of colleagues from other networks and publications (and crucially not with colleagues from the same organanisation which may limit what journalists feel able to share). Excited to explore the IPS model which might work well for the news industry. Grateful for the encouragement from John Schofield Trust and Jacob Granger and Marcela Kunova’s invitation to speak at Journalism.co.uk ‘s NewsRewired conference.
