Intelligence for Good, a nonprofit, pursues justice for victims of internet-enabled crimes such as romance scams, cryptocurrency scams, and call center scams. Through data collection, analysis and investigations, Intelligence for Good identifies criminal typology and emerging techniques being used to commit scams; provides legal teams with the resources needed to prepare for and speed up the prosecution of criminals; supplements the efforts of law enforcement and agents of justice who are outnumbered in addressing the volume of crimes committed against individual citizens; and connects victims to respected resources for support and recovery. Intelligence for Good is dedicated to equipping the next generation of cybercrime fighters, intelligence analysts and investigative attorneys with the skills necessary to address today’s digital landscape of cybercrime. Built on over a decade of research and intelligence on specific scams and scammers, and utilizing proprietary analysis tools, Intelligence for Good is fighting no-natural-predator crimes and producing results for victims. Later this month, you'll likely gather with friends and family to share a Thanksgiving meal. This is the perfect opportunity to educate them on #cryptoscams #romancescams #sextortion and all of the other ways that criminals use the internet and social media to target us. YOU know about these crimes. You'll be surprised how many of them don't. Take this chance to share what you know. They'll be thankful.

Convincing someone that an "investment opportunity" is actually a scam is often nearly impossible. Take a listen to this podcast featuring our very own Gary Warner and Stephanie, a smart, well-informed woman who lost a lot of money in what seemed to be a legitimate investment. #cryptoscams

One of the latest twists on #sextortion scams. Read the latest along with some practical safety tips from Brian Krebs.
Sextortion scams now include photos of your home. New, by me: "This week, several readers reported receiving sextortion emails that addressed them by name and included images of their street or front yard that were apparently lifted from an online mapping application such as Google Maps. The message purports to have been sent from a hacker who’s compromised your computer and used your webcam to record a video of you while you were watching porn. The missive threatens to release the video to all of your contacts unless you pay a Bitcoin ransom. In this case, the ransom demand is just shy of $2,000, payable by scanning a QR code embedded in the email. Following a salutation that includes the recipient's full name, the start of the message reads, "Is visiting [recipient's street address] a more convenient way to contact if you don't take action. Nice location btw." Below that is the photo of the recipient's street address."

Some good news from China on the #Fentanyl front. As part of the Intelligence for Good #TwentyTargets for Takedown project on #OpioidSales, our analysts at UAB work with Elizabeth Gardner who directs the #ForensicScience program in our #CriminalJustice department. Yesterday much of our meeting was looking not at fentanyl precursors, but fentanyl pre-precursors. In addition to our TwentyTargets, the analysts are spending time gathering websites that allow Chinese chemical companies to advertise and sell things like 1-boc-4-AP and 1-boc-4-piperidone while Dr. Gardner and another of her research students examine all of the known methods for making fentanyl and all of the ways those chemicals and their slightly alternate versions can be made. I’m no chemist, but from my notes, as an example, the place at which certain molecules are connected to the core piperidine ring changes the chemical formula to be a slightly different chemical, but one that fulfills the same function. So ortho-methyl-boc-4-AP is a different chemical than para-methyl-boc-4-AP, but either can perform a certain precursor function when cooking fentanyl. Companies that sell these chemicals in China can do so “openly” if their chemical is a slightly different chemical that is not specifically banned OR if they sell you two or three pre-precursors (with directions on how to combine them to create the actual precursor that you need for your cookup.) But not any more. The Chinese Ministry of Public Safety announced on August 2nd a new set of banned pre-precursor chemicals that will go into effect on September 1st. (In the U.S. we would say these were now “List I Chemicals.”) (Auto-translated though chemical names are notoriously hard to translate, so I’m also posting the Chinese.) 4-(N-phenylamino)pine, referred to as 4-AP, chemical abstract registration number, that is, CAS number 23056-29-3, customs code 2933399073; 1-tert-butoxycarbonyl-4-(N-phenylamino)pine, referred to as 1-boc-4-AP, CAS number 125541-22-2, customs code 2933399073; N-phenyl-N-(4-pididyl) acryamide, English name Norfentanyl, commonly known as desethylfentanyl, CAS number is 1609-66-1, customs code 2933399073. 4-(N-苯基氨基)哌啶,简称4-AP,化学文摘登记号即CAS号为23056-29-3,海关编码2933399073;1-叔丁氧羰基-4-(N-苯基氨基)哌啶,简称1-boc-4-AP,CAS号为125541-22-2,海关编码2933399073;N-苯基-N-(4-哌啶基)丙酰胺,英文名为Norfentanyl,俗称去苯乙基芬太尼,CAS号为1609-66-1,海关编码2933399073。 The above three substances shall be managed in accordance with the second category of precursor chemicals in the Schedule to the Regulations, and the relevant provisions on non-pharmaceutical precursor chemicals shall be implemented in their production, operation, purchase, transportation, import and export activities. https://lnkd.in/ejMDUaYS

How many fake Air Force General Douglas M. Fraser accounts are there on Facebook? Bill Sallurday made an incredible video showing how many there were. We went ahead and pulled a list. 1,278 currently live accounts as of this timestamp. 74 of the accounts have between 100 and 11,000 followers. 170 of the accounts have made public posts in the past two weeks. 81 of those accounts posted more than 10 public messages in the past two weeks. Here's the link to Bill's video: https://lnkd.in/e6jVBtic

Check out this example of successful #crypto seizure. Important to note: the criminal were so committed to the long-term value of this scam that they allowed the victim to withdraw $30,000 of profit to build trust!! Over time, the criminals took almost $800k from her. #cryptoscams #pigbutchering
Want to see how to seize cryptocurrency? May I commend to your attention the complaint by FBI Special Agent Scott Norris and the DC US Attorney and their Asset Forfeiture Coordinator Rick Blaylock? Seizure warrant: https://lnkd.in/eJwZm_6H After Boston resident "A.Z." began receiving investment advice from "Kevin" who they met on Chinese social media platform WeChat, they made some trial investments on the recommended site, "MyBinet[.]com" (active from May 2019 through Dec 2021.) A KEY POINT TO SHARE WITH "Crypto Investors" -- A.Z. WAS ABLE TO WITHDRAW $30,000 OF HER PROFITS! Based on that successful withdrawal and the confidence gained by it, they continued to invest - and those later investments were NOT able to be withdrawn. She lost $793,000. While the funds were traced to BitKub in Thailand, THIS IS NOT A HINDRANCE to U.S. Law Enforcement. FBI Bangkok worked with the Royal Thai Police to identify two money launderers who were receiving the funds and converting them to Thai Bhat. Wasit Cholumnuay and Chatchal Kraibumrung were notified that they were illegally laundering money, but didn't stop. Many of their funds were laundered through Binance where dozens of accounts, some likely created under duress by members of the "pig butchering" gang, were used to structure or layer the cryptocurrency transfers. When interviewed by FBI Bangkok, with the assistance of the Thai Royal Police, CHOLUMNUAY admitted that he was using the accounts of many others in order to avoid daily withdrawal limits that might trip alarms. Binance has demonstrated repeatedly that they had no meaningful money laundering controls of any sort in place. (See the SEC lawsuit for copious documentation - their 136 page complaint from June 2023 here: https://lnkd.in/eiy_CKDG ) We always see Binance at cybercrime conferences. Despite the lack (?former lack?) of #AML practices, #Binance is VERY good at cooperating with law enforcement when asked. This case would not have been possible without their cooperation and enormous volumes of documentation, and I have to give them credit for that. The FBI/US Attorney complaint that is used as the basis of this seizure warrant is full of documentation and diagrams that were used to document the existence of several other crypto investment scam victims and their losses, proven on the block chain. Please review this document with a mind towards "What is possible" in recovering #Cryptocurrency losses from #CryptoInvestmentScams, better known by the sensational and victim-degrading term #PigButchering, which is what the criminals call it themselves -- 杀猪盘 (Shā zhū pán). Although it is only one of several related criminal schemes being conducted from the Chinese-organized crime operated scam compounds in Thailand, Myanmar, and Cambodia. As China cracks down viciously against these scams at home, expect to continue to see more US-base targets!
