Last night, I attended a live session of my favorite talk show, "Tish," where host and former NGA Director Letitia Long interviewed America's Space Dad, the Honorable Dr. Christopher Scolese, at the Intelligence and National Security Alliance leadership dinner. If you're a nerd like me, Dr. Scolese is basically your Tom Brady. The 19th Director of the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) has three engineering degrees, served as NASA's Chief Engineer 20 years ago, and ran the Goddard Space Flight Center. The difference between NASA and the NRO? "I can talk about 99% of the stuff I did at NASA. NRO, about 1%." Scolese discussed - at the 500km level - NRO's investment in a resilient, persistent, proliferated architecture. But he also noted "eventually aperture wins." This is his more scientifically correct way of saying "size matters." There is a role for small satellites but if you need to answer a question that requires sensitivity and precision, the size of your antenna or your mirror drives the design for what you can hear and see ??♀?. Tish asked what he thought of quantum. "Ooh, that's one of my favorites!" said no one ever... except Scolese who squirmed in his chair like you asked him to read his Battlestar Galactica fan fiction novel (probably exists). Scolese said the NRO invests in quantum sensing, communications, and encryption but not quantum computing because "many others are doing that and we will take advantage of it." I nearly choked on my 5lb cheesecake when she asked if he had any concerns about his launch vehicle supply chain, particularly a concern about the oft-maligned United Launch Alliance Vulcan ?? rocket ?? (one of two systems certified to launch his big aperture space toys). He said all new systems have problems and "ULA is a good company and they will figure it out." I'm going to keep that little saying in my back pocket for the eight times I'm going to need it this week. In what would have been a sick burn to the former NGA Director if delivered by anyone but the lovable, affable Scolese, he said his engineers were using #AI to solve "easy problems like recognizing tanks and trucks" but also much harder things upon which he refused to elaborate. The 68-year old federal leader's retirement has long been rumored and the electrical engineer on the right asked the electrical engineer on the left if he had any closing thoughts and advice for young people entering the field: "The future is bright and shiny and you'll make it brighter and shinier." Oh, Dr. Scolese. When we talk about "exquisite systems" we mean you.
