Shoutout a mentor or colleague that has influenced your career path in a meaningful way:
"I’d like to take a moment to give a special shoutout to Joseph Camerata, who was not just my first boss but also the person who truly set me on the path that has defined my career. At just 18 years old, I started working under Joe in retail loss prevention, a role that introduced me to the world of investigations and surveillance. Joe’s passion and commitment to the field were evident in everything he did. He taught me the fundamentals of conducting investigations, from tracking shoplifters to uncovering internal thefts, and his mentorship was invaluable in those early days.
Under Joe’s guidance, I developed a strong foundation in criminal justice and loss prevention, which fueled my desire to learn and grow in this field. What began as a position as a store detective eventually led me to the role of Director of Loss Prevention and Security for several large retailers. In these roles, I was responsible for not only investigating and preventing theft but also producing comprehensive training manuals on security policies and procedures. These experiences broadened my expertise and prepared me for the next big step in my career.
In 2007, I founded ELPS Private Detective Agency, a highly successful firm that has since grown to include both an investigative division and a security division. Our agency provides criminal defense, specializing in homicide cases, expert witness, security consulting, risk and vulnerability assessments, investigative, and security services to a diverse clientele, including attorneys, businesses, and private citizens. The firm also offers specialized security services for industries such as cannabis, retail, corporations and the legal field, helping to prevent quality-of-life crimes through proactive measures.
My career has been enriched by the many mentors and colleagues I’ve met along the way, each contributing to the professional I am today. However, it was Joe who first ignited that spark in me, showing me the importance of thoroughness, integrity, and a relentless pursuit of the truth. His influence was the catalyst that drove me to where I am today.
Beyond leading my firm, I also have the privilege of serving as the Executive Director of Intellenet, an international network of investigators with over 600 members in 70 countries. This role allows me to contribute to the global investigative community, sharing knowledge and fostering professional development among our members.
Looking back, it’s clear that the lessons I learned from Joe during those formative years have had a profound impact on every step of my journey. I’m grateful for his mentorship and for the many opportunities that have come from that early foundation in loss prevention. Thank you, Joe, for steering me in the right direction all those years ago."
