    THE WHOLE WORLD IS PUSHING BACK (Rock Mechanics Related, Not Political). In physics it is action and reaction, in the spiritual realm it is called Karma. In rock mechanics, when the pressumeter probe is pushed against the rock, increasing the load and deforming it, elastically first, until it yields and fail in shear (and possibly in tension), the rock mass is pushing back against the probe. When unload/reload cycles are performed, even past the shear failure, the rock memory is “erased” and the whole rock mass is pushing back with its elastic behavior. The slope of the unload/reload cycle is directly a measure of the shear modulus, consistently….. Is it that rock Karma is forgiven temporarily? I think it is a matter of INTEGRITY and INSITU conditions!!

    THE USUAL AND THE NEW.... The plug in the picture has been over my desk for 20+ years, even though my desk has moved quite a bit around cities and countries.?My colleagues from PDVSA – the blue-?will recognize the field this piece of rock belongs to, in which sand production problems were pervasive. Stress data was scarce (as usual), but we had several cores (I managed to keep this plug as a souvenir!!). Core data was critical to identify the weak link in the stratigraphic/sedimentological sequence. Detailed numerical modeling to investigate the stability of the perforated cavity was done. With the usual procedures, we engineers managed to integrate field, lab, models (and human) factors to provide understanding and useful field solutions. But essentially, the weight of the decisions for sand control-management- exclusion was done over a piece of rock of 2.5 in length!! In rock and soil engineering, civil and mining practitioners have relied for many years on in-situ testing for characterization and also for design. It is now the turn of oil and gas, geothermal, and subsurface storage engineers to use the Integrity Insitu – INSIGHT tool. The INSIGHT tool can perform at the depths of interest of these projects, measure displacements to the micron level, while pressurizing a borehole (even inducing tensile failure – Shmin – without injecting fluids), and ?indenting and scratching the rock under ?in-situ conditions. ?Scale is 1:1000?with respect to the volume involved with the core,?and under the actual stresses in the field. ?? ? It is quite a challenge to add to our usual procedures, ?these new ones with the wealth of data and interpretations of the rock behavior considering in-situ heterogeneity, anisotropy, failure, pore pressure and temperature. I will still keep my core, absolutely valuable in many, many?ways, and also because I like to touch and see my rocks to gain Insight!!

    Oilfield Case Analysis: Solid Production in Fractured Carbonate Reservoirs We (Khosro Rahimi, Kamran Ahmadi, Abdorreza Karkevandi, Mohsen Hajalizadeh and Hasan Yekta Parast) excited to share insights from our latest case study analyzing Solid Production in Fractured Carbonate Reservoirs and presenting an innovative evaluation technique for predicting solids production. ?? Key Findings The deposits observed in the stone trap primarily consist of: ?? Carbonate particles larger than 2 mm. ?? A mixture of Hydrocarbons (Asphaltenes) and Carbonates of varying sizes. ?? Predominantly Hydrocarbon (Asphaltene) compositions. ?? Classification of Production Wells 1?? High and Medium-rate wells: Produce coarse-sized deposits, often mixed with hydrocarbons. 2?? Low-rate wells: Yield hydrocarbon deposits, clay compounds, and fine solids. ?? Strategies for Controlling Solid Production ? For High and Medium-rate wells: Operate within the Solid-Free Production Zone. ? For Medium and Low-rate wells: Stay in the Solid-Free Production Zone and actively manage Asphaltene deposits accumulation. ?? Conclusion ?? Stone traps are effective for solid control in high and medium-rate wells. However, when solid particle sizes decrease to less than 2 mm, they tend to accumulate as asphaltene deposits. ?? In low-rate wells, stone traps can negatively impact production. The pressure differential before and after the trap often creates unstable conditions, increasing the frequency of cleaning operations. ?? For wells where carbonate particles smaller than 2 mm constitute less than 5–10% of the total volume, removing the stone trap can enhance well performance. ?? CAUTION: Removing the stone trap can have adverse downstream effects. It’s essential to carefully evaluate: ?? Production performance. ?? Cleaning operation frequency. ?? Long-term impacts on pipelines and equipment. Each decision should be tailored to specific operational conditions. These insights highlight the importance of a tailored approach to solids management in fractured carbonate reservoirs. ?? How does your team tackle solids production challenges?
