I have been quiet on LinkedIn recently. If you already subscribe to my weekly mailing list you will know that I only share coaching tips, tools and insights.?I don’t use my mailing list to sell or excessively promote my business.?You can subscribe here: https://eepurl.com/iJjJpg I believe coaching resources should be freely available because of how effective they are in equipping individuals to overcome their own barriers, limiting beliefs and unconscious assumptions to achieve the things they set out to. So although I’ve been quiet on LinkedIn I’ve been very busy behind the scenes keeping my loyal subscribes resourced, working with some wonderful businesses and business leaders, and also writing this. I’m tackling the subject of how we challenge and address negative behaviours.?This is a complicated topic and one that requires careful consideration.?I’m not going to apologise for it’s length.?Our human brains are equipped to be able to focus and process lots of information. ?We need more of that. BUT, I do appreciate that time is precious. If you don't have much time, I've chunked out with headings which you can skip through at a high level and focus on the conclusions. For those with more time, why not block out 15 minutes and consider this part of your CPD - Continuing Professional development?! Consider what resonates and get curious about what insights you draw from this. I hope I’ve done the topic justice.?I also hope you find it insightful and I’d love to hear your thoughts. In this article, I’m going to be considering a few perspectives. That of the so called “perpetrator”, the culture and behaviours of those senior executives who were informed yet did nothing, those who had the courage to call out this behaviour and the us; wider public.?For reasons of sensitivity, I’m not going to examine the perspective of the victims but of course I am dreadfully sorry for what they have experienced and I hope they are getting the care and support to heal and move on with their lives. Sometimes I am embarrassed to call myself a human. We should be better than the headlines of these past few days. I'm preaching to the converted here.?And this isn't a promotional post for my business.?But it is a plea to acknowledge the role and power of coaching tools and approaches in addressing what is going on. At the root of the behaviours we are seeing is fear.?The nature of the fear will be individual and unique to all those perpetuating the kinds of abhorrent behaviour we are seeing.??But fear is the common unifying factor. @Adam Bastock made the point well after the election about how effective the rhetoric was between the Reform party and the Green Party in corralling support, by tapping into this fear. When relationships and society’s break down like this, we need to learn how to be human again. I would love to see more constructive narrative in the media about this. We need to learn how to communicate better.?Good communication doesn’t start with listening and speaking.?It starts with having an awareness, an understanding, an appreciation of another person (or group/s) perspective, values, feelings.?Even if we don’t agree with them (I’m not saying I do or don’t agree btw). To better understand, we need to first learn how to cultivate empathy for what we don’t know. Rather than fear it. This is exactly what coaching is about.?It’s about acknowledging and understanding our fears, assumptions and limiting beliefs, and learning ways we can respond to them that serve us (all) better.?It starts with us, always. Because if we are better, those around us are better, and we are all better. I may sound wacko when I say this but coaching can literally change the world, in a positive way.?And this isn’t a belief, it’s what I know based on what I have seen and experienced, time and time again. My lasting ask, if you are in any kind of position of authority:? What steps have you take to cultivate empathy for another recently? ? Consider someone who triggers you or pushes your buttons, how can you put yourself in their shoes for one minute and consider things deeply fro their perspective? What is one action you can take today that will positively impact another person? And if you are struggling with what is going on right now, then I have availability for some 121’s where you can vent/think/cry/make sense of what is going on. I’m here for you and DM me if I can help. #empathy #compassion #kindess

“Coach, mentor, captain”. This is what employees are looking for in their line managers, according to the former Australian PM Julia Guillard. I just attended this recent Chartered Management Institute The Leading Issue interview with the former PM talking about leadership and the key challenges leaders in politics and corporations are encountering right now. Wonderful #wakehurst!
I just had to post after a wonderful morning at #Wakehurst thanks to the brilliant team Brighton Chamber. Amongst learning so much about all of the imperative conservation and wilding work that is done, including through the Millennium Seed Bank project (utterly mind blowing and incredibly humbling), learning about the cultivation and management of their wild meadows provided a perfect analogy for how we could (should) think about the kind of society and local community we want to create, nurture and value, especially in the run up to polling day. A meadow is essentially a social structure, a community comprised of its many of different species, each fulfilling it’s role, contributing in it’s own unique way and purpose. For each species to flourish, the right environment must be created.?For a meadow to flourish, this requires species working collaboratively, and not competing with one species and seeking to dominate (and if you’ve read the Selfish Gene by Richard Dawkins, you’ll understand what happens to that species when that happens.?Spoiler alert, it doesn’t end well for the competitive and domineering species!). Each species needs the right amount of space, light and water for the whole meadow to flourish. I’ll leave you with that sentiment, which I just love. As I don’t have a garden, it was utter bliss to be spend time at Wakehurst today and if you haven’t seen much greenery lately,?I hope you like the photo. Lovely to see Ella Turner Kathleen Sinclair Kirsten Trussell John McDonald Ellie Burroughs Luke Hedley-Dent Sowf Chiew FCCA Larissa Bellotte Marilena Reina #environment #conservation #inspiration

What he said! In case you don't follow him, I thought I would repost this article; "Ask Richard". If you are a business owner or leader working to change the world, it is tough.?And sometimes we all need a bit of positive inspiration to remind us that doing good business is not only the right thing to do, but that it is possible to be successful from doing the right thing.?They are not mutually exclusive. Sir RB (and note how he doesn’t use his official title, he’s a human leader) talks about some of the hot topics which have transcended history.?The importance of working collaboratively and remaining optimistic in the face of adversity when fighting unacceptable issues is a key point we all benefit from being reminded of. If you need a shot of optimism, I hope this suffices. #motivation?#equality?#problemsolving
