Change is external; it tweaks, shifts, and rearranges. Transformation is internal—it requires a complete reimagining of who we are and how we lead. It’s not about surface-level improvements—it’s about?becoming. In?Learning to Walk in the Dark, I share how life has pushed me beyond my limits, asking me to surrender to something deeper. These weren’t moments of change; they were moments of?transformation—painful, uncertain, yet profoundly necessary. The Chrysalis: Breaking Down to Break Through Before a caterpillar becomes a butterfly, it?dissolves?inside the chrysalis. The old form completely breaks down, allowing imaginal cells—the blueprint for the butterfly—to activate.?Without this breakdown, there is no breakthrough. As leaders, we all experience our own?chrysalis moments—times when old ways fall apart, and we must surrender to transformation. The Legacy of Inner Leadership: What Will You Leave Behind? At some point in our lives, and??perhaps even more so with school leaders, a quiet question emerges: “What will I leave behind?” It’s a question that I pondered on deeply when I left Headship, and it remains one that I regularly reflect upon the older I get! And as I do, I now believe that legacy isn’t just about what happens at the end—it’s shaped in the everyday moments of life and leadership. In my new book,?Learning to Walk in the Dark, I reflect on how true leadership is forged in times of challenge, when we have to find a way to dig deep into an inner well of wisdom that we all have! This is where the?5 C’s of Inner Leadership?come in. These traits were guiding lights for me during my recovery from cancer and which I also use to guide readers in my book. The 5 C’s that I speak about are: ???Curiosity?– Staying open and asking deep questions ???Commitment?– Staying true to purpose, even in tough times ???Courage?– Acting with integrity and standing for what matters ???Compassion?– Leading with kindness and humanity ???Connection?– Recognising that leadership thrives in relationships It's my belief that when we embody these qualities, our impact doesn’t fade—it?echoes into the future.
