Families Choosing Integration

关于我们

Integrated Schools prepares families with racial or economic privilege to commit to integrating our children, driving new narratives about education, and advocating for justice in our public schools. Integrated Schools envisions a racially and socioeconomically integrated public school system where power and resources are shared equitably, humanity is valued unconditionally and all communities reap the benefits. Embracing the promise of integrated schools to prepare all students to thrive in an ever-globalizing world, provide equitable access and cultivate meaningful bonds across race, class, and ethnicity, we not only value but prioritize integration. Because school segregation is as much a story of failed public policy as it is one of white/privileged families thwarting it, our hearts-and-minds campaign offers a new model for integration in which this undertaking falls not on the backs of marginalized communities, but on white and/or privileged families who care about equity. By working with parents to examine their privilege and understand that their impact matters more than their intentions, Integrated Schools prepares parents to support meaningfully integrated classrooms that reflect the diversity of their district as well as school communities that respect ALL families and are galvanized around supporting ALL children. Through national organizing to promote local action, we support, educate, develop and mobilize families to “live their values,” disrupt segregation, and leverage their choices for the well-being and futures for their own children, for all children, and for our democracy.

  • It has been a while since we read a book written by an Indigenous author and we are thrilled to have chosen The Serviceberry as our Spring Book Club pick. Author Robin Wall Kimmerer is a mother, scientist, professor, and enrolled member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation. She is also the author of the #1 New York Times bestseller Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge and the Teachings of Plants. Kimmerer lives in Syracuse, New York, where she is a SUNY Distinguished Teaching Professor of Environmental Biology, and the founder of the Center for Native Peoples and the Environment. ... As a movement of parents and caregivers attempting to redress the imbalance of power in our systems of education, we encourage ourselves to view all the children of our communities as all our children. How do we live up to that ideal? Early on in the book Kimmerer writes "The currency in a gift economy is relationship, which is expressed as gratitude, as interdependence and the ongoing cycles of reciprocity. A gift economy nurtures the community bonds that enhance mutual well-being; the economic unit is 'we' rather than 'I,' as all flourishing is mutual." ... We believe this book is the perfect opportunity to center ourselves in this idea that "All Flourishing is Mutual" as we know we have a long road ahead of us. The Serviceberry is concise, readable, metaphorical and deeply feeling. It is also a manageable volume for YA readers, and might prompt some awesome dinner table conversations if you wanted to share it with older kids. ... • Expanding Our Impact in Hamden, CT ... The Hamden chapter is set to broaden its impact this year by not only increasing local awareness of the effects of segregated schools but also by providing mutual aid and addressing intersecting issues. Building on their past efforts, such as leading a protest to protect students from targeted harassment, actively participating in council meetings to oppose over-policing, and tackling persistent housing injustices, the chapter continues to expand its advocacy efforts. ... "We cannot advocate for educational equity when our kids are going home to crumbling home foundations or facing persistent bullying directed at our most marginalized community members. All of society’s problems flow through our schools, which is why we cannot ignore the other issues our community is facing," say Kristin Eno and Tarah Pawloski, Hamden chapter co-leads. ... • "We are in a moment where collective political education, spiritual education, community education is really, really important, and the state institutions that we've relied upon to be vectors of truth are failing us right now. And, we absolutely need to fight really, really hard to not simply relinquish them. We can't just cede that territory. And at the same time, we can't wait to win that fight to keep teaching the things that we need young people to know." - Dr Eve Ewing Season 11 Episode 12 ... https://lnkd.in/eQP5k5Sj

  • "If you had to distill it all down to a simple fact, it really has to do with people being tasked to care for our children who do not love them, and who seem constitutionally unable to love them, in a system that does not love them, and has positioned itself in such a way that its own survival is contingent upon not loving them. Because if you love them, you're gonna start treating them differently in ways that undermine the intentions of the country in which you find yourself." -Dr. Eve Ewing, The Integrated Schools Podcast, Season 11, Episode 12 ... https://lnkd.in/eQP5k5Sj
