Aaron Hussey, P.E., CAP and Robert Frazee are presenting on the importance #PrincipalAnalyst at EPRI's Fleetwide Monitoring Interest Group conference. The duties of a Principal includes that of an M&D analyst, but goes beyond normal duties. The Principal is responsible for verifying the accuracy of M&D program results and how to communicate those results. The Principal is responsible for determining proper and timely methods for communicating M&D program findings to engineering, component SMEs, and/or operations. The Principal is responsible for training and continuing education within the M&D program. Lastly, the Principal is responsible for mentorship, not only for the M&D program, but for peers in the industry. Thank you to EPRI for allowing us the opportunity to take part in #FWMIG this year. George Bernard Shaw once said, "Never try to teach a pig to sing. It wastes your time and annoys the pig." What's the first thing that comes to mind? An annoyed pig, of course! What's the second thing that comes to mind? Your APR software.? ? When we break down the original intent of APR software, it was designed to detect long-term degradation mechanisms - hence the x of y alerting capability. Don't get me wrong. APR is great at detecting these when modeled properly. But for modeling medium- and short-term degradation mechanisms? Not so much. ? Some APR software vendors have added hard alerts (binary) and other necessary features, such as alert management, case management, etc. That doesn't negate the fact that you may be relying upon your APR software to do things it wasn't designed to do. ? At Integral Analytics, we prefer a "toolbox"?approach where we utilize the right tool for the desired result. Start with the failure mode, break down the degradation mechanisms and influences, determine which sensor sets are required, and determine your actionable limit. Only after that should you determine what tool you need to complete the process. We break this down in painstaking detail?on our website. Be sure to take a look.

There is a famous quote from Steve Jobs who said, "It's better to be a pirate than to join the Navy." Having two Navy veterans on our leadership team, this is a powerful message. Now, did Steve Jobs recommend plundering gold? Not exactly. What he meant was that it's easier and faster to innovate without the bureaucracy and red tape of a very large company. At Integral Analytics, we've seen this exact scenario play out repeatedly - in a good way. Some companies have their own Innovation groups who run semi-independently. Other companies have their own Monitoring and Diagnostics departments who also run semi-independently. In both scenarios, feedback was overwhelmingly positive. Additionally, they both exhibited best practices that have been included in M&D Best Practices reports.
