So here is a story. In my hospital, we do orthopaedic surgery :). I am the Chair of the department. This means I have the responsibility to work with the surgeons and the hospital to bring in the best possible equipment for better patient outcomes. We successfully used power equipment (oscillating saw/drill, etc.) from company X. Life was good. Let's say for example we were using Version 12 of a long-standing system. I get a phone call that Company X was coming out with Version 13. I looked at Version 13 and it did not seem to have too many advantages of our current Version 12. Additionally, the price to "upgrade" to Version 13 was over $500,000. I will repeat that, $500,000. Therefore, I respectfully declined the upgrade as our power equipment (Version 12) was working beautifully. Case closed. Not so fast. Company X came back and said "Version 12 is 'end of life' and we are no longer supporting this line in terms of service. You need to 'upgrade'" This is power equipment!?!?!?!?! End of life? No way to get it serviced? $500,000? No one in the world can service a saw or drill? I recall that when I was in private practice I had to buy a phone system. The choice at that time for me was Avaya and Panasonic. I spoke with both company representatives. The Avaya rep said they stand by their products for life. They used to be the Bell Telephone company and they are still servicing products they made 40 years ago. No end-of-life- obsolescence scenario. The Panasonic, a bit cheaper said they do not support the service of their system and if they discontinue a line of products you need to upgrade. I went with Avaya and never looked back. It is not only power equipment. Think of a prosthesis that was made 10 years ago and all it needs is a polyexchange now but the company says they don't support the product anymore. Appears irresponsible at so many levels.
