Cameron, Louisiana used to be the shrimping capital of the world, with fisherfolk supporting their families and communities from the bountiful waters for generations. But ever since methane gas (aka liquefied “natural” or LNG) export terminals like Calcasieu Pass LNG and Cameron LNG began operating in the area, the waters — and their nets — come up empty. For years, impacted communities across Louisiana have been fighting against the reckless buildout of these facilities, organizing to stop the threat they pose to their livelihoods, health, and heritage. Now, they’re taking on another sector that’s sinking their way of life: insurance. Specifically, major U.S. insurer Chubb. Louisiana-based organizer Roishetta Ozane said she worries Trump’s actions could worsen pollution where she lives. For years, she and other activists in the Gulf South have fought to stop the development of new liquified natural gas export terminals, which could contribute to air pollution in the already industry-saturated area. Ozane said that during the Biden administration, frontline advocates had achieved big wins, including stricter federal limits on particle pollution and the administration’s pause on LNG export projects. But Trump lifted the freeze on Tuesday, signaling that developments activists have been fighting against could move forward. “President Trump’s decisions will set us back several years … but I don’t want people to lose hope,” Ozane said. “It’s like I tell my children, you can’t back down to a bully.” https://lnkd.in/gkxqH_DT

?? Public Citizen and dozens of consumer protection, community development, environmental, climate, and racial justice advocates have joined together to form the Equitable & Just Insurance Initiative, a coalition that aims to develop solutions that can guide community leaders and policy advocates working to address the climate-driven insurance crisis. Targeting the hypocrisy of skyrocketing premiums whilst coverage is being cut for communities across the U.S., the initiative seeks to push policymakers to put people over profit, and hold insurers accountable for their fossil fuel underwriting and investments. Why are US insurance companies allowed to insure and invest $536 Billion in the very fossil fuel industry whose emissions are driving the extreme weather events which in turn are causing insurers to stop insuring? North America reckons once again with the for profit healthcare system and the insurance crisis has reached a boiling crisis point. Insurers around the world are also doubling down on backing oil and gas instead of addressing climate change that are destroying homes, displacing communities, and destroying livelihoods. Work in insurance? read how your workplace stacks up- https://lnkd.in/grNxarZv Insurance companies in the US are the bottom of the barrel when it comes to global restrictions on breakneck fossil fuel expansion, and with the incoming Trump administration gutting federal regulation, it's time to double down on corporations to do what is within their power. With the #InsuranceCrisis unfolding around us and the world facing a temporary breach of 1.5°C, insurers have an unparalleled opportunity to accelerate the clean energy transition. I’m excited to share Insure Our Future Global's 2024 Insurance Scorecard - Within Our Power: Cut Emissions Today to Insure Tomorrow. This year’s report uncovers concerning trends: current practices are amplifying climate risks and shifting costs onto policyholders and the public, deepening affordability challenges, protection gaps, and mounting risks for the industry, economy, and society. Key findings from the 2024 Scorecard: ?? Climate change can account for over one-third of weather-related insured losses this century, totaling $600 billion ?? The climate-attributed share of insured weather losses rose from 31% to 38% over the last decade on average, and their annual growth is outpacing the growth of insured losses ?? For more than half of the companies analyzed, climate losses appear to already exceed written premiums from fossil fuels in 2023 ?? Renewable energy insurance market remains less than 30% of the size of fossil fuel premiums, highlighting a major bottleneck in the energy transition ?? As insurers retreat from climate-exposed regions and delay urgent action, the impact is devastating: higher costs, greater risks, and deeper inequality for those least responsible for the climate crisis. Policymakers and regulators must act now to address affordability and protection gaps while tackling the root causes of the crisis. Insurers, too, must rise to the challenge—aligning portfolios with a 1.5°C pathway by prioritizing clean energy, community resilience, and the future of our planet. Together with a passionate and talented network of colleagues and partners, we are driving critical conversations and holding the insurance industry accountable to ensure a just and sustainable future. Let’s keep pushing for the change we need! #InsureOurFuture #WithinOurPower #ClimateAction #InsuranceCrisis #Uninsurability #InsuranceIndustry #SustainableFinance #NetZero #EnergyTransition

?? Tomorrow will be published the annual survey benchmarking the climate commitments of 30 of the largest non-life (re)insurers! And here are the questions that this year's report will attempt to answer: ?Which insurers stand out for ending their support for fossil fuel expansion, one of the primary causes fuelling climate change? AXA, Allianz, Lloyd's, Chubb, SCOR? With the new commitments made by Zurich Insurance and Generali this year, one thing is certain: there will be some movement in the ranking ?? ?? What is the impact of climate change on their policyholders? ?? What should regulators and public authorities, such as the European Commission, do to prevent the emergence of uninsurable zones in the future? ? What are the solutions for maintaining insurance affordability for citizens while climate catastrophes hit stronger? ??Milton, Helene, the Dana in Valencia, flooding in northern France, heat waves in India. The list is much longer, and there is an urgent need for insurers and public authorities to act. For answers to these questions, discover the new Insurance Scorecard 2024 tomorrow.
