Pilots that uncover innovative approaches to community insurance take collaboration and determination. The City of Isleton, California is a shining example of this. Situated almost entirely between rivers and sloughs, the town is no stranger to floods. A cross-sectoral group has worked to develop a new approach to flood insurance to provide financial protection to the residents of Isleton. Learn more on how Isleton created a Geological Hazard Abatement District (GHAD) as a structure to purchase community flood insurance. A special thank you to Kathleen Schaefer, Ph.D., P.E., CFM for her dedication to this work and for sharing it with us!

"Ensuring that the next generation of homes in the Pacific Palisades and Altadena are both survivable and insurable is not a barrier to rebuilding—it is a necessity." Tragedies born from growing risks implore us to do right by our communities by rebuilding safer and more resiliently. Doing so will save lives and homes by lowering future losses, protecting local economies, and stabilizing insurance markets. This is why Insurance for Good, along with other organizations focused on risk management, signed a letter to Governor Newson arguing?that Los Angeles should rebuild to Chapter 7a building codes. Not everywhere in the burned areas faces these requirements, but all areas that have burned should be built back as safely as possible. Read the full letter at https://lnkd.in/gRwdWeCk. Is the future insurable? I4G's?Carolyn Kousky?asked this question with esteemed colleagues Spencer Glendon,?Jeremy R. Porter, Ph.D., and?Bill Churney at the First Street Forecast event. At Insurance for Good, we know how critical insurance is at all scales. But we also know that unless we invest in lowering our growing risks and?rethink the future of?risk transfer, increasing numbers will not be able to secure the?financial protection they need.

We are excited to share a new blog post written by Katie Sabo from Aon, who serves on our Private Market Insights Advisory Group. Katie discusses the innovative use of parametric insurance they helped structure for Puerto Rico. "Insurance has a unique role in the public sector space to be a catalyst for resiliency both pre-and post-disaster. Puerto Rico's early adoption of parametric insurance is a significant step towards building a more resilient future. By embracing innovative solutions and proactively managing disaster risk, the island sets an example for other public entities facing similar challenges." Read more here:

Looking for discerning and approachable reflections on the future of insurance following the catastrophic California fires? We're on the cusp of radical changes in the insurance markets and yes, climate change is driving many of those changes. Dr. Carolyn Kousky of Insurance for Good joins the pod to talk about how the wildfires in California will be a catalyst for change, for better or for worse. The Insurance sector will need to rethink how they provide coverage with a changing climate in the years ahead as we're seeing the federal government take a back seat for a while to help with this process. We're counting on the states to get innovative in this space! Great conversation with Carolyn! https://lnkd.in/gPFjyFWC Helen Wiley Laurie Schoeman Alice C.
