Dr. Marilyn Hughes Gaston made history as the first Black woman to lead the U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration’s Bureau of Primary Health Care. This #BlackHistoryMonth, the Institute for Public Health Innovation will finish the month by highlighting the legacy of the Black Panther Party's (BPP) Community Survival Programs. From 1966 to 1982, the BPP was?a revolutionary organization that fought for health equity and social justice through health activism.?The organization created groundbreaking initiatives that addressed critical needs in Black communities, including free food, clothing, healthcare, and education. Their work paved the way for modern social service programs such as free clinics, community education, and research.? - Free clinics:?The BPP operated clinics that provided essential services like vaccinations, screenings, and first aid,? - Community education:?The BPP educated communities about health issues like sickle cell anemia, lead poisoning, and hypertension,? - Research:?The BPP funded research into diseases that affected Black people. This #BlackHistoryMonth, the Institute for Public Health Innovation continues celebrating #publichealth pioneer Imogene Bunn. Bunn was a champion for community health and social justice in our region. Her tireless work to address health disparities and empower underserved communities #Virginia has made a lasting impact. In 1946, she became the first Black nurse in the #Charlottesville area, working for the Instructive Visiting Nurse Association (IVNA). She provided care to both Black and White patients in their homes. Bunn was also a co-founder of the Charlottesville chapter of the @NAACP and actively worked to #desegregate public facilities, including the @uvahealth hospital, the local library, and other institutions. She became the nursing supervisor for the Charlottesville/Albemarle Health Department and, in 1970, the nursing director for the Virginia Department of Health Thomas Jefferson Health District. We honor her dedication and are inspired by her commitment to building a healthier and more equitable future for all.
