About two-thirds of news organizations in the Institute for Nonprofit News Network participated in the?GNI Fundamentals Lab?from late 2023 through 2024. At the end of every three-month lab, each of the 315 organizations was eligible for $20,000 in implementation funds from Google News Initiative to advance their sustainability goals – leading to a $6.3 million infusion of funding to support the sustainability of the nonprofit news field. Here's what newsrooms learned – and how they spent their $20,000 implementation grant: https://lnkd.in/eiFr-xEu

Lauren DeLaunay Miller, a reporter for California Health Report, told INN that her experience on the Yosemite National Park Search & Rescue team gave her “a lot of practice talking to people… in a very vulnerable position.” She talked to INN about how being a former first responder influences her reporting for this month's In Other News:

As rent prices soar and living conditions deteriorate, many tenants in Chicago find themselves trapped in unsafe housing—forced to pay more while landlords evade responsibility. An investigation from INN Network member?Injustice Watch?reveals the stark reality: thousands of renters are living in buildings riddled with code violations, facing eviction or displacement, while the system protects landlords over residents. This #SunshineWeek, we are reminded why transparency and investigative journalism are critical for accountability. When policymakers and enforcement agencies fail to act, journalists step in to uncover the truth, amplify marginalized voices, and demand change. Without rigorous reporting like this, these stories might never come to light. At INN, we are proud to support independent news organizations like Injustice Watch. Nonprofit journalism plays a vital role in our democracy—shedding light on systemic issues, equipping communities with essential information, and holding power to account.

NONPROFIT NEWS? Yes. 501c3 is a tax status. It's also a model that commits to the community. People over profits. Here's just one way nonprofit news is different from corporate media and for profit news outlets. No candidate endorsements. “We are stronger together than we are alone,” Vanessa de la Torre of Connecticut Public said about the New England News Collaborative, an example of collective fundraising featured as a case study that accompanied the DIY Guide INN published in January. Last week, INN hosted a webinar featuring de la Torre and representatives from Connecticut Mirror, Eden Prairie Local News (EPLN) and MinnPost on their newsrooms' experience using collective fundraising. ?? We're proud to have supported The Sick Times?through our NewsMatch program, helping journalists Betsy Ladyzhets and Miles Griffis raise $115,000 in their end-of-year 2024 fundraiser. In this AHCJ feature, the co-founders share how they built a vital publication covering COVID-19 and long COVID when mainstream media moved on. Starting as a newsletter without secured funding, they've grown into a respected nonprofit newsroom that centers the experiences of those living with long COVID while providing rigorous scientific reporting. This is exactly the kind of impactful journalism INN exists to nurture — filling critical information gaps and serving communities that might otherwise be overlooked. Building a rural news audience can be particularly challenging, especially where internet access is limited. That’s why?INN member Shasta Scout explored direct mail as a way to build connections with residents. With support from INN and?Indiegraf, Shasta Scout was able to compare Facebook ads and direct mail as methods to reach those audiences.?The case study?shows that while physical outreach can close those gaps and engage offline communities, it’s costly to do so.
